Stowe is just a short distance off Interstate 89, nestled in the narrow valleys of Vermont’s beautiful Green Mountains. Since the 1930s, when laborers from the Civilian Conservation Corps cleared the slopes of Mount Mansfield for skiing, it has been one of the most famous winter resorts in America. In a state filled with skiing, Stowe is consistently ranked as one of the best on the East Coast.

Even if you’re not much of a skier or boarder, Stowe is an amazing destination, filled with cultural attractions, great farm-to-table restaurants, and a plethora of excellent outdoor activities. After you’ve worked up an appetite from a full day on the slopes or trail, the Ben and Jen’s Factory is just down the road, waiting with a sample of their latest and greatest creations.

Discover Stowe

The Great Outdoors

Whether you’re hitting the slopes or simply enjoying a stroll in the woods, getting a travel trailer rental in Stowe is all about spending time outdoors. Most visitors come to ski or board at Stowe Resort and other nearby mountains like Smugglers Notch and Mad River Glen. These ski areas offer the same level of adventure, but without high-speed lifts, luxurious lodges, and ski-in, ski-out accommodations.

Stowe offers plenty of activity during the summer months too. Vermont’s only long-distance trail, the aptly named Long Trail, runs along the spine of the Green Mountains just outside of Stowe. Hiking the full length of it takes weeks, starting at the border with Massachusetts and ending at the just south of Canada. However, many visitors will section hike just a few miles of it while they’re in Stowe. One of the more popular routes takes hikers to the summit of Mount Mansfield, the state’s highest peak.

If you prefer to enjoy the scenery from the comfort of your Stowe campervan rental, there’s the Stowe Mountain Auto Toll Road, a winding mountain path from Stowe Resort up into the Green Mountains. It has some excellent viewpoints, and the colorful forest landscape is particularly popular with leaf peepers during the fall.

RV Parks

Vermont isn’t exactly known for being the most RV-friendly state, with few dedicated parks and sparse amenities. However, when you book an RV in Stowe, you’ll be near to a few of those coveted parks, some of which have hookups and facilities while others are set up for dry camping. Mountain View Campground near Morrisville is one of the closest options and has fantastic views of the Lamoille River. All of their sites have full hookups for your motorhome rental from Stowe along with a swimming pool, hot tub, mini-golf course, and volleyball court. They also rent kayaks and inner tubes to use on the river-the perfect way to spend a summer afternoon.

There’s also Gold Brook Campground a short distance down the highway towards the town of Waterbury. Some of their sites have full hookups, and they also offer a dump station, showers, laundry facilities, and flush toilets. This could be a good place to camp when you choose an RV rental in Stowe because you’ll have easy access to the interstate should you decide to drive to Burlington, Vermont’s largest city, or Montpelier, its capital.

Another option is Smugglers Notch State Park, which is located at the base of the ski hill of the same name. None of their sites have hookups, but there are flush toilets, hot showers, a dump station, and firewood. Bingham Falls is close by and an excellent hike to explore the beautiful Green Mountains.

Exploring the City

Stowe is one of the top tourist destinations in Vermont, so you should have no trouble finding things to do when you rent an RV there. Along with its famed ski hill, Stowe is most well known for the Von Trapp Family and the film The Sound of Music. The Trapp Family Lodge, the home of the family after they escaped from Europe, is a must-see attraction when you get a camper rental in Stowe. Not only can you learn more about their fascinating story at the lodge, but it also has almost 30 miles of cross-country skiing trails to explore.

While just about every town in Vermont has its own brewery (the state tops the list of breweries per capita), few breweries are quite as famous as the Alchemist, just a few miles outside of Stowe. Their Heady Topper brew is the stuff of legends, with many residents of Boston and New York driving for hours just to get a case of it. Their website even lists what day their shipments go out to various Vermont stores and beer enthusiasts camp outside these establishments to await their arrival.

Stowe also has a rather active arts scene for such a small town, and it’s well worth a visit to one of the galleries or museums while you’re there. The Helen Day Art Center has excellent exhibits created by members of the community, and they regularly host events around holidays and festivals. There’s also the West Branch Gallery and Sculpture, a museum on the West Branch of the Little River that hosts pieces from more established artists in the area.
