Discover Blacksburg rentals for memorable road trips

Home of Virginia Tech University, Blacksburg is a midsize college town tucked in the Appalachian foothills, with lush scenery and gently rolling terrain. Roanoke is less than an hour’s drive away. Named in honor of William Black, the town was founded in 1798 on a 38-acre lot he platted into 16 squares and deeded to the town trustees. His brother’s land made up the core of the Virginia Tech campus while another early settler's farm also formed the university grounds.

For travelers, it’s Blacksburg’s proximity to some of the country’s most iconic parks that’s most appealing. One can easily search for an RV in Blacksburg and set off on a scenic drive on Blue Ridge Parkway, or venture on foot for a walk of a lifetime on a portion of the Appalachian Trail. The town itself sits at the base of the Jefferson National Forest, and you only have to hike or bike up a pleasant trail to discover more of the forest’s natural wonders.

On The Fringes of Appalachia

You don't need to leave town to soak up the verdant scenery and get a good workout. Several paved walking and biking trails take you through the gently rolling landscape of Blacksburg. Close to downtown, the tranquil 0.8-mile Deerfield Trail serves up a variety of scenic views while walking alongside Tom's Creek. For a more vigorous workout on two wheels, take the paved seven-mile Huckleberry Trail that connects Blacksburg to Christiansburg. The trail is gently graded and dips 100 feet as it approaches Christiansburg. Those seeking an uphill hiking, biking, or horseback riding adventure may want to set their sights on the 1.3-mile Gateway Trail. The natural-surfaced trail connects the town's Heritage Park to the national forest where over 30 miles of the Pandapas Pond Trail system await. When you rent an RV in Blacksburg, you're well-placed to explore the nearby Jefferson National Forest, with foothills extending to Pandapas Pond just above the town. One of the most visited spots in the forest is the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, home to the tallest peak in the state. Hike to the summit via the Massie Gap. If you love to combine adventure, culture, and history, hike the 60-mile Appalachian Trail that passes through the NRA. If you’d rather explore the region in your motorhome rental from Blacksburg, drive to the Whitetop Summit, the second highest peak in Virginia. Expect to see stunning views from the top on a clear day. For a truly iconic drive, bring your travel trailer rental from Blacksburg to the Blue Ridge Parkway for a slow-paced adventure where long range mountain vistas, up-close rugged mountain views, and pastoral landscapes of the Appalachian Highlands greet you at every turn. Launch a kayak and glide peacefully on Price Lake, or choose one of the many trails cutting through the park for an exhilarating walk. Enjoying the refreshing company of the parkway's flora and fauna is a major visitor draw, so keep your eyes peeled.

Where to Park Your RV

New River Junction features a riverside setting, tubing activities, and outings to Big Falls Park. There are electric and water sites here along with restrooms and hot showers. A dump station is available in place of sewer hookups. For a quick camping spot, the Walmart parking lot in Christiansburg is worth considering for your camper rental from Blacksburg. It’s the closest you can find outside of Blacksburg. Seek approval from the store management first before getting comfortable to ensure a pleasant stay. A step up is Interstate Overnight Parking, also in Christiansburg. As the name suggests, it's a simple parking lot close to the interstate with water, electric, and sewer hookups. Other camping spots can be found in Pembroke and Floyd.

The Town of Sixteen Squares

The best way to get acquainted with Blacksburg is to take the historical walking tour of the Sixteen Squares, the original 16 plots of land that eventually became the townsite. Some of the interesting landmarks within these squares are the (house with the) Five Chimneys, and the log cabin houses of the early 1800s at the intersection of the Wharton- Jackson Streets. The Presbyterian Church and the Christ Episcopal Church sanctuary are two of the few old buildings from the mid-19th century that remain standing today. Visitors often rent a motorhome in Blacksburg to celebrate school-related events of family and friends going to Virginia Tech. You probably don’t have any other reason to step inside the campus, save for a visit to the 150,000-square-foot Moss Arts Center where visual arts galleries, a 1,260-seat performance hall, and amphitheater are located. Aside from showcasing exhibits on a wide range of subjects, there are plenty of hands-on learning opportunities here for all ages. Blacksburg overflows with dining options, as you would come to expect of a university town. The culinary range is international, so you’ll find Latin fare and several Asian and Mexican restaurants. There’s also an abundance of classic American quick bites and counter-serve food. You can eat healthier, too, if you buy fresh produce and artisanal baked goods from the local farmers' market (open year-round but with varying days and hours) on Draper Road. With more than a dozen gas stations and about a dozen grocery and convenience stores here, you won't be rushing out of town to refuel or get supplies. For a walk back in 1774, wander the halls of the Smithfield Plantation Home for a glimpse into the lives of William and Susanna Preston, their 12 children and their slaves and European indentured servants. The Prestons were one of the earliest settlers on the Virginia Frontier, as Col. Preston was instrumental in helping the westward expansion of the colonies. The house, now a museum, displays what family and plantation life had been before the birth of the United States. There’s so much more to see and do in Blacksburg, but don’t forget to discover what lies beyond. Book an RV rental in Blacksburg today, go out and have an epic fun.

The good ! The ac was ice cold, the main bed and couch were super comfy ! The unit had extra sheets and towels !!! The main areas were clean. The not so good The listing pictures don’t show the peeling cabinets and wear that’s on the unit. There were some major communication issues, including having to drive an extra 40 minutes to get the unit because, last minute, the pick up location was changed 40 minutes past my route (the main reason I chose this unit was because it was already in our route to our destination) There was a strong urine smell in the bathroom, which was caused by urine sitting in the toilet from before we picked up. It continued to smell very strong of urine even after I flushed it. The twin beds were super uncomfortable… they were 1/2 foam on top of wood slats… I’d expect a unit like this to be slightly upgraded. Thankfully Outdoorsy was quick to respond to my concerns, nothing was done to remedy the situation (other than we were allowed to drop it off at the previously agreed upon location. Because of the bad communication and cleanliness issues I would not rent from this host again.

Everything was great, the RV was in perferct conditions and the technical support I received was outstanding. It was my first time driving an RV and I have to call the manager several times during the trip to get basic information about how to operate the facilities, and he was always helpful.
