Lake Sylvia State Park spans over 233 acres and rests near Washington’s coastline. This state park surrounds an old lumber mill that was once used to provide electricity to the local area. Today, the state park is best known for being home to a handful of bird species, like ducks and eagles, which often nest in the nearby forest and hunt in its waterways.

Lake Sylvia State Park is a short drive away from Olympic National Park and cities such as Olympia and Centralia. This area of Washington tends to be very rainy throughout the year, although summers have somewhat comfortable temperatures.

Getting Outdoors

Visitors can enjoy the great outdoors in many ways while here. One activity is to go fishing. Lake Sylvia State Park contains Sylvia Lake, which is filled with species like trout, bass, and perch. There is also a boat ramp available, but boats with internal combustion motors aren’t allowed.

Thanks to the vast amount of birds living in the state park, you could also try birdwatching. The area is a popular birding spot thanks to its unique mixture of forests and waterways. Some species birdwatchers might be able to see include owls, falcons, hawks, wrens, and woodpeckers. Birdwatchers can also attend the Grays Harbor Shorebird and Nature Festival that celebrates the migration of numerous shorebirds to the area during the spring.

Another thing to do at Lake Sylvia State Park is hiking. Visitors will find many pathways to trek down in the park. One trail to consider is the Lake Sylvia Trail, which spans almost three miles long and runs along the shoreline of the local river and provides views of a historic dam. There’s also the Brownie Trail, which is bordered by a thick forest and is ideal for those who want a challenging workout.

When you book an RV in Grays Harbor County, there are a few places you can do so at. One option is Artic RV Park. This travel trailer campground has 20 camper sites that come with electric and WiFi. There are also restrooms and hiking/biking trails available.

There’s also the Hoquiam River RV Park. This motorhome campground rests along the shoreline of the Hoquiam River and provides many shaded RV sites that have amenities such as electric, cable, WiFi, and water. This pet-friendly campground also has a laundry room, horseshoe pit, kayak launch, and recreation hall.

Exploring the Area

There are many interesting attractions nearby visitors can drive their camper to. In Aberdeen, there’s Grays Harbor Historical Seaport. The seaport is where numerous historic vessels are docked, like Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain. Visitors can explore the ships and learn more about their interesting history. Tickets can be bought when you’d like to take a sailing trip on one.

Half-an-hour away in Raymond is the Northwest Carriage Museum. The museum is home to a vast selection of 19th-century carriages as well as wagons and buggies. Museum-goers can tour its interior to view these historic transportation methods while learning more about them and what they were used for. The museum also has a gift shop that sells a variety of souvenirs, like books, jewelry, and toys.

In Westport, visitors can check out the Westport Maritime Museum. Built-in 1939, this structure first served as a Coast Guard Station before eventually being converted into a museum. Inside, visitors will find historic nautical artifacts, like lighthouse lenses and ropes. There are also exhibits that tell of its history and how it was used to help guide ships and save those out at sea. When you’re done touring the museum, you can walk a few steps over to its Whale House that contains the skeletons of numerous sea creatures.

A two-hour drive to La Push will take you to Rialto Beach. This beach is situated near Olympic National Park and is surrounded by coastal forest. Visitors can hike down the beach to get stunning coastal views or to explore its unique landscape. Other highlights of the beach include tidepools and sea stacks. During warm months, the beach is outlined with colorful wildflowers.

There are a few gas stations situated near Lake Sylvia State Park, but they are a bit of a drive away. Because of this, it’s important that you have some fuel on hand for your camper. You’ll also find a small selection of restaurants, but for more options, you’ll need to travel to a nearby city. For those who would like to enjoy some local dishes or snacks, a few to try are cherries, cedar-planked salmon, apples, and Dungeness crabs.
