Spanning over 454 acres on the western edge of Wisconsin lies Chain Lake. The lake is 18-feet deep and packed with a variety of fish, making it a popular spot for fishers. Chain Lake is located near many other major bodies of water, including Pine Lake, Potato Lake, and Long Lake.

Chain Lake is situated near cities such as Eau Claire and Barron. The area has a continental climate, which makes the summers here warm, but the winters are very frigid and snowy.

Getting Outdoors

Visitors to Chain Lake will find many things they can do outdoors while here. Fishing is a favorite activity to do at Chain Lake. The lake has a 74-foot depth making it a favorite swimming spot for numerous fish, including bass, pike, and walleye. There is a public boat ramp available and a few boat rentals nearby. You do need to keep an eye out for some invasive species that also live here, such as rusty crayfish.

Another thing to do at Chain Lake is to search for local wildlife. Chain Lake is surrounded by thick marshes and forests, making it a favorite nesting spot for many animals. The lake is also located next to the Ohmart Wetlands, which is filled with white pine, cedar, and spruce trees. Some native wildlife species to look for include loons, deer, wolves, owls, woodpeckers, foxes, and turtles.

While at Chain Lake, you could also go hiking. There are a handful of trails winding around the edge of the lake and a few that will lead you into the nearby Ohmart Wetlands. The wetlands feature miles of trails that will take you through meadows and other beautiful landscapes. A short distance away from Chain Lake, you will find Round Lake County Park, which is home to many walking trails as well.

Camping at Chain Lake

Wolf’s Den RV Campground also has a game room, showers, and tavern. Pets are allowed, but they must be leashed at all times.

Exploring the Area

There are plenty of places to drive your camper to if you’d like to explore the surrounding area. Less than an hour away from Chain Lake in Eau Claire, WI is the Chippewa River State Trail. Covering over 26 miles, this trail runs along the Chippewa River and eventually joins the Red Cedar State Trail. This pathway can be used for hiking and cycling. During the winter, the path can also be used for snowmobiling. While exploring the trail, you’ll be taken by beautiful landscapes and might even catch a glimpse of local wildlife.

In Chippewa Falls, you could drive your RV rental to Irvine Park and Zoo. This 318-acre attraction features hiking trails that meander around a small zoo. Some animals living at this zoo include hyenas, bears, bison, and monkeys. During the holiday season, the park hosts a Christmas Village, which transforms the grounds into a stunning winter wonderland.

A quick drive away in Wausau is the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. This quirky museum features numerous collections that highlight the natural world. It’s best known for its “Birds in Art” exhibit, which features hundreds of art pieces depicting birds. In addition to this, the museum also has an origami exhibit, vintage French posters, and art from indigenous communities from India. When you’re done exploring its interior, visitors can step outside and tour the museum's massive garden that is filled with fragrant plants and sculptures.

While in Wausau, visit Rib Mountain State Park. This 1,528-acre park offers many outdoor activities to do, such as hiking, swimming, and fishing. It’s also known for its towering hill, which is thought to be one of the oldest geological formations in the world.

There are many gas stations located next to Chain Lake that are only a few minutes away. Restaurants are also abundant here and are a mixture of major chains and local cafes. For those looking to consume some favorite local treats and dishes while visiting, some to try include bratwurst, cheese curds, and booyah stew.
