Mason is an agricultural town in Mason County, Texas, and is the county seat. The town was first settled around Fort Mason in 1846; a post office was established in 1858, first as an addition to the fort but a few months later it was reassigned to the civilian community. After the end of the U.S. Civil War, returning soldiers and ranchers began a conflict over cattle rustling known as the Hoodoo Wars. A Texas Ranger, John Cooley, formed a gang that included famed western gunslinger Johnny Ringo. Other notable people who lived in Mason included author, journalist, and American West historian J.
