Planning a getaway to the Grand Canyon State? Book an RV in Cochise County and you can discover Kartchner Caverns State Park, as well as other Arizona gems like the Coronado National Forest and Whetstone Mountains. You can also visit historic Old West sites, tee off at championship golf courses, and sip award-winning wines at desert vineyards. Discovered by a pair of local explorers in 1974, Kartchner Caverns is one of the most enchanting limestone cave networks in North America. The caverns sit at the base of the Whetstone Mountains and are filled with mesmerizing rock formations, including Kubla Khan, a 58-foot-tall column that rises above the Throne Room.
Guided tours take you deep into the five-million-year-old caverns, where you can marvel at jagged spires, soaring columns and sparkling stalactites. From April to September, the Big Room is closed to the public and reserved for roosting myotis bats arriving from Mexico. The park is passionate about education and conservation, so be sure to follow the rules and do your part in protecting the delicate underground ecosystem.
Enrich your visit at the Discovery Center, where you can purchase tour tickets, learn about the geology of the caverns in the theater, check out ancient 86,000-year-old sloth bones, and browse the gift shop. The Discovery Center also offers the scoop on local activities like guided sunset hikes and nature walks. Beyond the caverns, Kartchner is proud to be a designated International Dark Sky Park. Stargaze from your RV rental site or join a public astronomy event.
