In the heart of central California almost equidistant from both Los Angeles and San Francisco, Avenal is one of the largest cities in Kings County. The city was named hundreds of years ago by Spanish soldiers who noticed the endless seas of oats in the Kettleman Plains. “Avenal” means oat field in Spanish, an appropriate name for a soon-to-be agricultural community. Since the mid-19th century, this agricultural community has produced large amounts of food, but after the discovery of oil in the 20th century, Avenal rapidly grew into a prosperous boomtown with a quickly climbing population.
