Previously known as Maxwell’s Creek, Coulterville, CA is located around 20 miles northwest of the significantly bigger town of Mariposa. At an elevation of over 1600 feet, this small town is nestled amongst the foothills of stunning Sierra Nevada.

Coulterville is stuck back in the time of the Californian Gold Rush and offers visitors the chance to visit over forty historical monuments that have outlasted many other towns in the area. Littered with buildings from it’s mining past, it has been named a Californian State Historical Site.

Coulterville is centrally located between Modesto and Yosemite National Park making it a convenient place to explore the great outdoors if you are traveling in a camper rental from Coulterville.

Just eight miles west of Coulterville you will find the grand Lake Don Pedro and impressive Lake McClure. The two lakes combined total a surface area of 20,000 acres of water and 200 miles of shoreline making this area an absolute mecca for water lovers. Just north of Lake McClure, Horseshoe Bend Recreational Area provides the perfect night of sleep. During the week sites are easily available, but booking comes highly recommended at the weekend. If you’re heading towards Yosemite National Park after your visit to Coulterville, Mountain Meadows Campground will be perfect for a quick overnight stop. Should you need a quick overnight stay, consider Walmart, larger grocery stores, and truck stops. Consider stopping off in a larger town such as Modesto or Merced on the way, where, you can find larger stores such as Walmart, and reasonably priced gas stations. Both of these may offer overnight camping, just check with the manager before setting up for the night.

Exploring the City

Named as one of California’s State Historical Landmarks, exploring this small town transports you back to the late 1800’s, just before the start of the Gold Rush.

Hotel Jeffery is the most striking building, taking centre stage on the main intersection in the town. Immediately behind here you can explore old mining structures all with ample information available. Many buildings also double up as museums telling stories of old residents who lived here, the great fire of 1899 and the changeable past of the buildings that you are exploring.
