Helendale is an unincorporated member of San Bernardino County, in the state of California. It was originally named Point of Rocks and was a popular stopover for travelers heading through the mountains to the coast. Kit Carson, a famous historical figure in the Early West, was said to have stopped here. The Santa Fe Railroad built a station here in the 1880s in order for trains to refill their water supply before heading out across the High Desert. In 1897, the town's name was changed to Helen, in honor of railroad executive Arthur G. Wells' daughter, Helen A. Wells. It was finally and permanently changed to Helendale in 1918. Helendale was also one of many communities on and associated with Route 66.
