Manchester State Park encompasses more than 5,200 acres of awe-inspiring coastal wilderness in Northern California. Like most natural areas in the Sunny State, Manchester State Park boasts a significant stretch of Pacific ocean shoreline which keeps visitors coming back. Beach bums will find plenty of activities to enjoy here, including fishing, beachcombing, and wildlife watching.

Colorful coastal flowers breathe life into this hidden gem, which also doubles as a habitat for the migratory tundra swan, the threatened snowy plover, and the Point Arena mountain beaver. If you time your visit just right, you can even do a little whale watching.

Camping in an RV is an excellent way to experience the tranquility of Manchester State Park. If you don't have your own rig, you'll find an array of affordable RV rentals in Mendocino County. Planning to camp at Manchester State Park? You'll want to pack a windbreaker and some warm clothes in your rental RV. Although the climate here is relatively temperate, strong winds gust off the coast year-round.

Discover Manchester State Park

Getting Outdoors

Unsurprisingly, the beach is one of the park's main attractions. The park's four-mile stretch of shore is rarely crowded, making it a firm favorite for beachcombers in search of driftwood and other ocean treasures. Start your surfside stroll at the Point Arena Lighthouse and end at Alder Creek Beach, another prime place to watch for whales. Avid anglers will also find a new favorite fishing spot here — Brush Creek and Alder Creek are home to an abundance of steelhead.

If you'd prefer to stick to dry land, lace up your boots and hit the Davis Wetlands Trail, which leads from the campground to Alder Creek Beach. On your excursion through the dunes and wetlands, keep your eyes peeled for sea pinks and blue irises. Bring your binoculars and watch for great blue herons, peregrine falcons, and egrets.

In search of some high-octane thrills? Experienced surfers and windsurfers may also want to test their mettle in this choppy part of the Pacific in the summer.

Camping at Manchester State Park

Park your rental motorhome at Manchester State Park's campground, featuring 40 primitive family sites which can accommodate RVs up to 30 feet long. The maximum length for trailers is 22 feet. You'll enjoy standard amenities here, including a picnic table, fire ring, flush toilets, and a dump station. Hookups aren't available.

Prepare for an off-the-grid RV camping experience at Manchester State Park. Cell phone reception is virtually non-existent here, and you won't find any showers, either. If you're planning to bring Fido along for your RV camping trip, you'll need to keep them on a six-foot leash and away from the beaches and trails.

In addition to the standard sites, an additional eight hike-in environmental sites and one group site are available. All sites at Manchester State Park are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Exploring the Area

Point Arena Lighthouse and Museum is a must-see for history buffs camping at Manchester State Park. Climb to the top of the lighthouse and soak up the views of the Pacific churning below. You can even book a full moon tour for a unique view of the ocean. The museum features artifacts from the lighthouse and the native Pomo peoples who inhabited this area. Be sure to stop by the whale watch room, which provides an excellent viewing area in addition to informative displays. A gift shop is also available to visitors to remember the special day in Point Arena.

An hour north, in Fort Bragg, is where you'll find the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. The garden encompasses 47 acres of colorful wildflower gardens, sculptures, and trails right on the Pacific coast. Visitors can walk through the garden toward the bluffs, where they can admire the ocean.

Art enthusiasts will want to make the 30-mile trip up the Pacific coast to visit Mendocino Art Center. Photography, sculptures and pottery, woodwork, and stained glass are only a few of the pieces you may see in the galleries here. Mendicino Art Center offers more than 150 classes for a variety of mediums, as well as fun events and special shows.

Need more time in the great outdoors? Head two hours east to Mendocino National Forest. This vast wilderness encompasses nearly one million acres of alpine lakes, mountain peaks, and quiet woodlands. You'll find several campgrounds where you can park the RV rental and set out on your next adventure.

When you're ready to call time on your motorhome camping trip at Manchester State Park, head south down Shoreline Highway to find a few gas stations. Point Arena is your closest option for groceries and other supplies. Once you're ready to hit the road again, you'll find no shortage of urban attractions and scenic natural areas to explore in this part of Northern California.
