Pleasant Hill remained largely undeveloped until after World War II; a post office was built in 1948 and it was incorporated in 1961. The city is widely recognized for its architecture. There was no “downtown” until July 2000, when the Downtown Pleasant Hill shopping center opened. This outdoor mall, privately owned and operated, resembles a typical Main Street and was deliberately designed this way.

Pleasant Hill's former iconic structure was the dome-shaped CinéArts Theater. It was more popularly known as “the Dome”. Its final screening was “2001: A Space Odyssey” and it was torn down shortly after to make way for commercial construction, despite public opposition. Pleasant Hill's City Hall, constructed in the late 20th century, has won a number of architectural awards.
