Somis is an unincorporated community in Ventura County, California. Somis is also a Chumash (Native American) word for “water of the scrub oak”. It was established in 1892 as a farming community growing corn, wheat, and barley. The region has dry and warm, not hot, summers, making it a comfortable place to visit or live. The Fulkerson family has been a prominent part of the town as far back as 1912 when father John opened what would become a chaotic hardware store and town landmark. John's brother James opened a blacksmith shop in 1892, the first business in town. One part of the shop is a museum. A steel floor safe is one of the unique features of the store, having been scorched by a safecracker in 1921 who stole money and then relocked the safe, spinning the dial for good measure. Unfortunately, no one had the combination and the safe hasn't been opened since.

Book an RV in Somis and you are on your way to a vacation filled with tall tales and anecdotes that may or may not be historically accurate (but are entertaining nonetheless). There are some other towns and communities that might be interesting to travelers. Santa Paula was originally a center of the California petroleum industry but today introduces itself as “the Citrus Capital of the World”. Moorpark is one of the towns in Ventura County supporting the Green Power Alliance (an energy provider dealing in environmentally friendly energy). Thousand Oaks is referred to by residents as “T.O.” and is named after the numerous oak trees in the area. Camarillo's main thoroughfare is the Ventura Freeway (Highway 101). Oxnard is home to the California Strawberry Festival. Your Somis motorhome rental is your invitation to visit all of these places and many more.

Discover Somis

The Great Outdoors

Marina Park is an oceanfront recreation area where guests can fish off of the dock or search the beach for crabs, go for a walk along the pier, or sit back and enjoy the sunsets. It has restrooms and water fountains, and a jogging trail. There is a playground and a beached “pirate ship” for the younger children. Park your Somis camper rental nearby and combine an adventure-filled day with a home-on-wheels lunch.

Lake Eleanor Sentinel is a wildland habitat with a freshwater lake and rustic, ungroomed hiking trails. It is maintained by the Conejo Open Space Foundation. Some sections of the trail might be challenging due to hills and loose rock but it is generally an easy hike that shouldn't prove too difficult for most people. Visitors can look down from the path to see Lake Eleanor, which isn't accessible to the public; Lake Eleanor Dam is a historical landmark.

Happy Camp Canyon Park is a grassland and forest habitat where visitors can hike, ride mountain bikes, or go horseback riding. The trails are clearly marked and relatively flat, making them an easy and enjoyable excursion. There are several trails, some more strenuous and longer than others, suitable for those who want to push themselves a little bit.

RV Parks

There are many RV parks and campgrounds near Somis. Your Somis RV trailer rental is the perfect addition to these destinations to make your vacation perfect.

Mountain View RV Park is a modern park surrounded by orange and strawberry plantations and is only one hour's drive from Los Angeles. It has full hookups, Wi-Fi, and a commercial spa. It is very close to Ojai Valley (a good hiking destination), Santa Barbara wine country and Ventura Beach.

Ventura Oaks RV Park is a pet-friendly campground with picnic tables and a barbecue area, restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, and more. It has sewer and electrical hookups, propane services, and views of the nearby rolling hills. It is 10 miles from the Pacific Ocean and five miles from shopping in Ojai.

Castaic Lake RV Park is a groomed RV campground with plenty of activities for its guests and is located very close to shopping malls, restaurants, and anything else you might want. It has restrooms and showers, laundry services, and full hookups. Most of the sites have pull-through access. There is an on-site store and there are numerous trees to provide shade.

Exploring The City

There is a lot to see and do in and around Somis. There are gardens and specialty shops, museums, and parks; one museum traces the history of the military in nearby Camarillo. Another museum focuses on vertebrate zoology. There are breweries and vineyards where you can not only see the grapes being produced but sample the finished product too. For the die-hard shoppers, there are factory outlets where you can buy name brand products at reduced prices. Keep your Somis travel trailer rental on hand and you won't have to carry your purchases with you from store to store.

After an enjoyable yet exhausting day, you will be happy that Somis does an equally good job with its restaurant industry. Many of the restaurants in this town are locally owned and operated, which is as good for the customer as the owners. An Indian restaurant includes some Indo Chinese items on its menu; if you come here, try the Kashmiri Pulao. There are Mexican and Italian restaurants, and more, which could spell trouble for those who can't decide.

If that does happen, your Somis luxury RV rental is your path to a nice home-cooked meal, enjoyed in lawn chairs under a star-filled sky. What more could you ask for?
