Templeton was founded in 1886 by the West Coast Land Company, who intended to name it “Crocker” after the vice president of the Southern Pacific Railroad, Charles F. Crocker; but Crocker instead decided to name the town after his two-year-old son, Templeton. Originally, the town was the end of the line for railway passengers heading south from Northern California, who would then head to San Luis Obispo by stagecoach. In 1889, the railroad was extended an additional 14 miles south to Santa Margarita and Templeton was re-classified as a flag stop. Since then it has been re-classified again as a bypass and the train's actual stop is in nearby Paso Robles.

In 1898, most of the wooden buildings along Main Street were destroyed by a fire and so this business section was rebuilt using brick, but on a smaller scale than the original buildings. Today these buildings still stand as a reminder of the town's history and as a testament to the older and some would say more beautiful architecture. It is also one of the fastest growing communities in the county. The town is a mere 7.76 square miles in size, so when you book an RV in Templeton, getting around should be relatively easy.

Templeton belongs to San Luis Obispo County. Other nearby towns and cities include Santa Maria, and San Lucas. Being a typical Californian town, albeit a small one, it has the distinction of being home to the actor Josh Brolin and baseball player Sandy Koufax.

The Great Outdoors

Visitors intending to spend their day or days soaking up the sun should head for Morro Bay. Morro Bay State Park offers sailing, fishing, hiking, bird-watching and golfing; the cafe at the park's southern tip will keep patrons from having to wander back into the town in search of food.

A few miles away, Atascadero has the Jim Green Trail for hikers, Charles Paddock Zoo (off of I-41) and a golf course, which is right next door to Heilmann Regional Park. Just up the road, non-golf extremists will find a miniature golf course.

RV Parks

Elks Lodge #2733 is just a couple miles from town and could be a nice place to park the motorhome rental near Templeton. It has electricity, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, and big rig access. Farther to the north, Paso Robles has Cava Robles RV Resort, Wine Country RV Resort, Paso Robles RV Ranch and Vines RV Resort. These Paso Robles parks have lots of amenities like full hookups, Wi-Fi, big rig access, pull through sites and a swimming pool.

Southwest of town, in Morro Bay, visitors can choose from a few parks, all located within a 15-mile radius of Templeton. All of these parks offer full hookups and some have Wi-Fi access.

Exploring The City

Being a smaller location, many of the attractions are located outside of Templeton, but there is still a lot to engage a newcomer. There are a few breweries within striking range, a host of wineries and numerous vineyards. There are food tours guests can take, although these are located in Paso Robles. Jack Creek Farms has orchards and animals on display and has food items for sale which you may sample before buying. They have varieties of honey and pomegranate cider; you can ask if they produce honeycomb (no promises), which is a rare and exceptional treat when you can find it. The Groves on 41 and Happy Acres Family Farm are two more farms worth checking out that will probably be able to accommodate parking your Templeton travel trailer rental.

Studios on the Park in Paso Robles is an art gallery and educational site which has studios for local artists. There are even more art galleries and museums to check out, including a museum that specializes in automobiles. Park your Templeton RV rental nearby and save having to worry about getting your purchases home in one piece. Paso Robles has a waterpark with slides, a wave pool and river, and an RV park across the street. It is a good choice for hot summer days. Visitors uncertain about the location of these venues can get maps and information from the town's welcome center.

When you rent an RV in Templeton, you’ll find that the cuisine is impressive but tends to focus on steak and seafood, with a few Asian and Mexican restaurants thrown in. The choices do range from cheap eats to moderately priced venues and fine dining, so there is something here for everyone. Being the small town that it is, any dinner out should begin with a walking tour of the restaurants to take in the ambience before settling on a specific place, and the restauranteurs will not mind wrapping up the remains your meal to take back to your Templeton luxury RV rental so you can enjoy it the next day.
