Templeton was founded in 1886 by the West Coast Land Company, who intended to name it “Crocker” after the vice president of the Southern Pacific Railroad, Charles F. Crocker; but Crocker instead decided to name the town after his two-year-old son, Templeton. Originally, the town was the end of the line for railway passengers heading south from Northern California, who would then head to San Luis Obispo by stagecoach. In 1889, the railroad was extended an additional 14 miles south to Santa Margarita and Templeton was re-classified as a flag stop. Since then it has been re-classified again as a bypass and the train's actual stop is in nearby Paso Robles.
