Discover Valley Center, CA

Valley Center is just a short drive from the popular Southern California destinations of Temecula and Escondido and day-tripping distance from both Los Angeles and San Diego. It’s also quite close to the famed Southern California vineyards, which produce some of the best wines in North America.

When you book an RV in Valley Center you are setting up an excellent base camp for all of the great activities that Southern California has to offer. Getting a travel trailer rental in Valley Center puts you just hours away from some of the best attractions while still having relatively affordable camping options at the end of the day.

If you do decide to visit any of the nearby metropolises though, you may want to park on the outskirts and use public transportation. The traffic in the cities can be legendary and no one wants to spend their whole vacation sitting in gridlock.

The Great Outdoors

One of the best outdoor activities to do when you get a camper rental in Valley Center is to go touring some of the vineyards nearby. It’s an excellent opportunity to learn about viticulture, experience the unique climate of Southern California, and at the end of your trek, a few glasses of wine will be ready for you to sample.

If you’d prefer a hike without a wine tasting though, head to Discovery Lake near the town of San Marcos. The lake isn’t that big, but it’s surrounded by well-developed trails, some of which are paved, that are popular with cyclists, joggers, and rollerbladers alike. Palomar Mountain State Park is also not very far away; summiting the peak is the perfect way to experience the mountains of California without needing to drive all the way to the Sierra Nevada farther north (its high elevation is also a good place to cool off on a hot day).

If vineyards and mountains aren’t your things though, you can always take off for the beach. Southern California’s sandy beaches are world-renowned and the ones near Carlsbad are some of the best in the state. Just be sure to bring a towel and plenty of sunscreen.

RV Parks near Valley Center

Valley Center is conveniently located close to the Peninsular Mountains and within easy driving distance of the Pacific Ocean, making it a great place to set up basecamp when you rent an RV. Woods Valley Kampground and RV Park is one of the places to camp when you choose an RV rental in Valley Center. Full and partial hookup sites are available there and they have a swimming pool and a pond for fishing provided you have a California fishing license. Another option is Lilac Oaks RV Park and Campground, which offers water and electrical hookups in addition to a swimming pool and laundry facilities. The park lies just north of Valley Center but is nestled into the mountains, giving it a much more rustic feel.

A little farther away is All Seasons RV Park and Campground and Champagne Lakes RV Resort, both of which are close to the coast if you’re thinking about splitting your time between there and the mountains when you get your motorhome rental in Valley Center. Both parks have sites with full hookups, a swimming pool, and easy access to Interstate 15.

The nearest Walmart to Valley Center is located in Escondido; camping there could be a good choice if you’re thinking of only staying for a couple of nights and are willing to ask the manager for permission. You won’t have any campground amenities, but it will be close to a lot of shopping and restaurants.

Exploring the Town of Valley Center

There isn’t too much in the way of shopping in Valley Center as most residents drive to either Temecula or Escondido to do it there. That being said, there are a few interesting little shops along the main street if you don’t feel like driving to the next town over.

The Valley Center History Museum is another must see and features a full-sized stagecoach that served as a Civil War-era ambulance (it later took on a new life as a Hollywood prop in the early 20th century). The museum also houses one of the largest taxidermy display of a California grizzly bear, a species that has not been seen in the state since the 1920s. For a more offbeat historical experience, check out the Miniature Engineering Craftsmanship Museum in Carlsbad. They have a wide variety of working miniature machines that could fit in a dollhouse but include things like steam engines, automobiles, and cannons.

Love animals but don’t have time to get down to the San Diego Zoo? The San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido is an excellent alternative. Herds of rhinos, zebras, and giraffes make their home here. If you’ve ever dreamed about jetting off on an African adventure, but didn’t have the time or the money, this is a great place to see the wildlife.
