The city was named after Aaron M. Richey, who established its post office in his home in 1884 and was finally incorporated in 1925. It is famous for being home to Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash from 1979 to 2002. It should not be confused with New Port Richey, just slightly to the south.

Port Richey has numerous gas stations, as well as multiple grocery stores and supermarkets. Many of these are locally owned and include several discount stores and at least two Walmarts.
