The Haan Mansion Museum of Indiana Art in Lafayette is dedicated to the art and artists of Indiana. The Mansion was originally the State of Connecticut building at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. Connecticut chose architect Edward T. Hapgood to design the building. The state wanted their pavilion to represent a country gentleman's home, and the architect patterned the building after the 1820 Sigourney Mansion in Hartford. Many components were taken from the 1760 Hubbard-Slater Mansion in Norwich including the front entryway, various interior columns, and door capitals. The mansion was designed and built to be moved after the World's Fair. It was dismantled and moved to Lafayette, Indiana, immediately after the Fair by Mr. and Mrs.William Potter and became their personal residence. There are only 15 known buildings surviving from the Fair, and the Haan Mansion is most true to its original design and purpose of the 13 buildings removed from the grounds. Tours are offered Wednesday through Saturday from 1 pm to 4 pm.
A visit to the Columbian Park Zoo in Lafayette is a great way to spend the day with family and friends. The Zoo?s mission is to encourage the appreciation of the world?s wildlife, to enhance the preservation and conservation of biodiversity and to inspire educational discovery and exploration in a fun, family-oriented environment for all citizens of the Greater Lafayette Area. Their collection of animals covers the whole globe. The Columbian Park Zoo has a long history in Indiana. The park was renamed in 1892 to ?Columbian Park? after the Chicago World?s Fair. The fair celebrated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus? discovery of America. The park officially opened in 1893. Rush Pavilion and the original boathouse were constructed in 1899. One of the popular attractions at the Zoo is the Historic Animal House. The Historic Animal House of Columbian Park Zoo was built in 1928 and has housed a variety of animals from small birds up to an elephant. Today, although the interior is no longer open to the public, it provides important housing for off-exhibit animals and breeding programs, as well as inside living quarters for primates. Patrons can see several species alongside the exterior Animal House, including spider monkeys, gibbons, and porcupines.
