Urbana is the county seat of Champaign County, Illinois and it was first settled under the name Big Grove in 1822. In 1833, the county of Champaign was created, and Big Grove was officially named Urbana and recognized for the first time. The new town grew quickly, adding stores, mills and the first church (in 1840). A second and third church would follow in 1855 and 1856. Urbana expected that the Chicago branch of the Illinois Central Railroad would pass through its borders, but the railroad instead bypassed the town two miles to the west, where it built a station that grew into West Urbana and then named itself Champaign. Competition spiked between the two communities, leading Urbana to tear down and rebuild a larger version of the County Courthouse in a bid to retain its status as the county seat.

RV rentals in Champaign County are your guarantee of finding the RV make and model that suits your vacation needs perfectly. There are other towns that are worth investigating and learning about while you're here. Paxton was originally named “Prospect City” until a railroad official noted that local citizens were saying the town was “all prospect and no city.” Tuscola's claim to fame rests on the shoulders of some famous actors and writers who live or have lived in Tuscola at some point in history. Monticello became well known for the invention of Pepsin Syrup which, through the Pepsin Syrup Company, became a significant contributor to Monticello's economy until the business closed in 1985. Your Urbana travel trailer rental is all you will need to have a relaxing and enjoyable vacation.

Discover Urbana

The Great Outdoors

Homer Lake Forest Preserve is a recreational area that is open year-round from early morning to mid-afternoon or late evening, depending on the season. Visitors can enjoy hiking the park trails, fishing on the lake, or even just having a relaxing picnic. The trails extend for miles, crossing through grasslands, prairies, and woodlands, and past the Salt Fork River and Collins Pond.

Kickapoo State Recreation Area is worth visiting with the Urbana RV rental. It's a popular destination for hiking and picnicking, canoeing, camping, and more, but it has the added benefit of a river and 22 ponds where visitors can scuba dive. Mountain biking is allowed.

Clinton Lake State Recreation Area is a cultivated park with a restaurant and marina, and hiking trails that surround the lake, winding through the hilly terrain. There is a beach for swimming, and fishing is allowed. The park also has restrooms scattered throughout.

RV Parks

There are a number of RV parks and campgrounds near Urbana, and some of them may have mobile homes. Your Urbana camper rental is the perfect vehicle for creating a fantastic vacation.

D & W Lake Camping & RV Park is a cultivated RV campground nestled amongst the trees. It has graded dirt roads throughout the park, a playground, miniature golf, and boat rentals, and much more. Sites can be rented by the day, week, or month; some have full hookups, others have only water and electrical hookups. Some sites have pull-through access, and there is an on-site convenience store where guests can stock up on supplies.

Exploring The City

There is a good variety of attractions to see in Urbana; guests should start off with a trip to the local Japanese Garden with its blend of ponds, gardens, and Japanese-style architecture. Guests can wander freely about the landscape or check out the indoor exhibits. When guests have finished here, the next stop is the University of Illinois Arboretum with its open landscape and gardens situated so that visitors can walk completely around each independent garden and see it from all sides and angles. If the sun becomes too much, visitors can head indoors and check out the museums, the public library, and a brewery with a tap room, an outdoor beer garden, and a play area for young kids. Those seeking something other than beer can choose from sodas, cold brew coffee, and much more. There isn't an on-site kitchen, so guests are welcome to bring their own food items or order from the food trucks in the parking lot and bring the food inside. Don't forget to take your Urbana motorhome rental for a spin while you can.

When the sun starts getting low and dining options become a more serious concern, visitors need not worry. Urbana has it all, from inexpensive venues to fine dining, and a healthy variety of cuisines. One of the local Italian restaurants is open from lunchtime to late evening so that no meal needs to be rushed. It has an extensive menu with salads, pasta, and pizzas, as well as a nice wine list and several beers on tap. Guests dining here should opt for the deep dish pizza, although it seems everything on the menu is equally good. Visitors should not miss the ambiance and experience of dining in, but if a quiet meal is what you want, the restaurant can handle takeout orders too. Head back to your Urbana luxury RV rental and enjoy your meal in your favorite lawn chair with the stars above; this is what vacations were made for.
