A small thriving city two and a half hours' drive from Indianapolis, Decatur was established in the early 19th century along the high banks of the St. Mary's River. Samuel Rugg donated parcels of his own land and spent his own money to build the town's earliest buildings to spur further growth. He was also instrumental in the creation of Adam's County and in making Decatur its county seat. Decatur is named after Commodore Stephen Decatur, a ship commander in the original US Navy.
