Baxter Springs is a city in Cherokee County that began as a trading post around the late 1830s and early 1840s. A community of European and Indian settlers grew around the post, and it was eventually named after a settler who had built a frontier tavern. It was the site of several Union forts during the Civil War (to protect against Confederate raids). The fort was torn down in 1863 when the Union forces relocated to Fort Scott, Kansas. The city became important twice again, once in 1868 when cattle drives used Baxter Springs as a stopover, and again when the discovery of large veins of lead created a mining boom. The main street became part of Route 66 in 1926, leading to a surge in hotels and fast food outlets, and cementing the city's place in popular culture.

Search for an RV in Cherokee County, and you can choose from amongst a fleet of RV makes and models for the unit that perfectly suits your vacation needs. Other cities are worth visiting in the area too. Chanute has a monument to both city founder Octave Chanute and the Wright Brothers; Chanute was very influential in early aviation and was an inspiration to Orville and Wilbur Wright. Coffeyville was the site of a gunfight between the Dalton Gang and local citizens when the gang attempted to rob two banks directly across the street from each other; the city holds a festival each year to honor those citizens who died in the battle. Oswego has five urban parks within its boundaries; many of the stone structures within these parks were part of a 1930's series of Kansas state public works employment projects. Your Baxter Springs travel trailer rental is how you will experience the culture and history of this area in comfort.

The Great Outdoors

Hollister Wildlife Area is situated on land that was purchased by the Kansas Fish and Game Department in 1978; the terrain is rolling hills and pastures, with isolated tree stands dotting the area here and there. Some of the area has been designated as farmland and is actively used for growing crops. The area and other rangelands like it have historically been used by grazing elk and bison, and later for cattle. It is a good area for cycling and primitive camping, but there are no amenities so guests should pack water and other necessities; the park also has a shooting range.

Schifferdecker Park is a family oriented and cultivated park with a picnic pavilion and tables, a playground, sand volleyball and basketball courts, and much more. Guests can go swimming at the aquatic center or play a round of golf. The park also has restrooms and other amenities.

Harmon Wildlife Area was a gift that was donated to the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks in 1975. The terrain is made up of bottomland hardwood tree stands and native prairie on the Neosho River floodplain. The prairie sections have a diverse selection of wildflowers, and the bottom lands have oak, hickory, and walnut tree stands due to the rich soil. Hiking is allowed, as is fishing and hunting, although guests will have to hike into the fishing spots, and it is a good location for nature photography.

RV Parks

There are numerous RV parks and campgrounds in the area surrounding Baxter Springs, but some of them are in neighboring states, and some may have mobile homes. Your Baxter Springs RV trailer rental is all you will need to have the vacation of your dreams.

T & S RV Park is an RV campground with level dirt access roads, some tree canopy cover and lots of grass area. It is open year-round and has a meeting room near the office with air conditioning and a camp store where guests can find necessities. Individual sites have full hookups for the Baxter Springs camper rental and some sites have pull-through access. The park is close to many local points of interest.

Exploring The City

Perhaps the best place to begin your Baxter Springs adventure is at a historic arch bridge just outside the city to the north. It is a part of the old Route 66 and is well preserved, with signs providing information and a good place to take some photos. There is also a Route 66 Visitor's Center that has information and nostalgic memorabilia such as vintage gas pumps and cars. The Baxter Springs Heritage Center and Museum has a number of exhibits from the Civil War, local mining history, and everyday life throughout the city's history. Slightly farther out of town, there is a quilt museum, a historic park, and a repertory theater. Don't forget to take your Baxter Springs motorhome rental for a spin out on the local highways; this is one of the unique attractions of an RV vacation but be warned: it can be addictive.

Dining out in Baxter Springs is relatively inexpensive, and there is a good choice of eateries. One local cafe is open for breakfast, lunch, and weekend brunch, and has a reasonably large dining area with room centered tables and takeout service. The menu is simple, and the portions are large; if the cafe is full (and it is popular), get the Philly burger with grilled veggies as takeout and head back to your Baxter Springs luxury RV rental to enjoy it under an open Kansas sky.
