Many of the developed trails are in the vicinity of Cave Run Lake; the Barrel Spring Interpretive Trail has signs that provide information about the natural and historical points of interest you’ll pass along the trail.

Swimming at Cave Run Lake is possible at two public beaches in the Twin Knobs Recreation Area and the Zilpo Recreation Area, while there are spots in the lake for snorkeling and scuba diving too.

There are several campgrounds in the areas around Cave Run Lake, each differing in amenities and proximity to the lake. The Zilpo Recreation Area offers over 170 campsites, with amenities like big rig access, tent camping, 30 amp electric service, dump station, limited cell phone coverage, restrooms, showers, and a camp store. When you’re looking for a place to camp in an RV near Cave Run Lake, the Outpost Campground and RV Park is an option to consider. The campground has 65 sites; camp features include pull-thru sites, big rig access, tent camping, full hookups, 30 and 50 amp electric service, water, sewer, WiFi, and cell phone coverage. Campers also have access to restrooms, showers, laundry facilities, and a camp store. The kids will love the playground and swimming pool. This is a pet-friendly campground, so bring your furry pets along.

Exploring the Area

Rowan County campers have plenty to explore in the areas surrounding Cave Run Lake. About thirty miles from Cave Run Lake is the county seat of Rowan County, the city of Morehead. With most visitors traveling to Cave Run Lake for its recreation, a halt at Morehead is worth it.

The Morehead Railroad and History Museum offers a wonderful insight into the history of the county, along with the railway history of the region. Exhibits at the museum include railroad artifacts from six historic railroads that operated in the county, exhibits dating back to a flash flood in the late 1930s, among others.

The Kentucky Folk Art Center, located at Morehead State University, houses over 1400 exhibits of self-taught art. While some collections are permanent, a few are on a rotating basis, with a focus primarily on folk art.

The Rowan County Arts Center is located in the historic Rowan County courthouse, and showcases rotating exhibits of local artists. The arts center runs workshops on art regularly too.

Drive-in your Rowan County camper rental to Rodburn Hollow Park and explore the many trails offered in this hidden park within city limits. There are playgrounds and picnic shelters available, too, ideal for a picnic lunch out in the sun.

Morehead has a couple of restaurants and eateries churning out that excellent southern fare. Cafes, bars, and fast food joints dot this little city, and you’ll have plenty of choices when it comes to eating out.
