Sturgis is a city in St. Joseph County, Michigan, and is located very near the Michigan-Indiana state border. It was settled as early as 1827 but didn't officially become recognized as a city until 1896. An urban myth suggests that the town was named after a resident who baked biscuits for a surveying party laying out the city limits; one member of that party would later become state governor (his name was Lewis Cass). Sturgis has a sister city, Weisloch, Germany, and began the relationship in 1966 as a part of the People-to-People program initiated by President Eisenhower. Since then it has exchanged community choirs, students, and even teachers. The two cities celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2016.
