Getting Outdoors

Many of Minnesota’s keen fishermen and women may not know of Lake Louise, and yet it is a fishing lake worth knowing. Lake Lousie is home to a wide variety of freshwater game fish, and you will be hard-pressed to find more picturesque surroundings in which to catch them. Sitting on the woodland banks of Lake Louise, Lake Louise State Park campers can catch fish species such as largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, sunfish, channel catfish, and many more.

Besides the great angling experiences to be had at Lake Louise State Park, boating is also a must. Canoeing and kayaking are favorites on this relatively small lake, and with the connecting Upper Iowa River, there is much to explore. Those motorhome camping without boats of their own can always rent kayaks from the park for a small fee. Lake Louise State Park is also a fun place for a dip in the water, cool off on those summer days in the designated swimming areas.

As well as the lakeside recreation, Lake Louise State Park’s location in the idyllic countryside offers all manner of activities. Hiking trails can be found all over the area, a perfect way to explore this picturesque county. The highlight of these trails has to be the nine-mile long multi-use trail from Lake Louise State Park to the nearby town of Le Roy. Venture a little further afield, and campers will find more accommodating RV parks. Maple Springs Campground is only a short drive from Lake Louise State Park and offers a lot more facilities and amenities to RV campers. 20, 30, 50 amp electrical and water hookups are provided at Maple Springs Campground. Facilities here include a dump station, flushing toilets, general store, and free WIFI.

Another campground option is the Beaver Trails Campground, just north of Lake Louise State Park. Full 20, 30, 50 amp electrical, water, and sewage hookups are provided here. Facilities include a dump station, laundrette, RV storage, general store, and a swimming pool. Many of the sites are pull-thru, meaning all sized rigs are welcome here.

Exploring the Area

When in Mower County, there are is a verity of unique day trip and sight-seeing options, all within a short drive from Lake Louise State Park. A fun and unique sight that is a must-see is the Spam Museum in nearby Austin. This funky museum is dedicated to the history of Spam, the famous brand of precooked meat products. Although no your usual go-to museum, the Spam Museum is one of those that is unmissable, if only for its unique nature. Many of the exhibits here include games and interactive videos.

Should you still crave a little more of the feeling of outdoors and nature, then a visit to the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center is for you. The center is located just outside of Austin and will only take a few minutes to drive to. This municipal nature preserve is five hundred acres of pristine forests and streams. The Jay C. Hormel Nature Center is also home to an interpretive center, complete with interactive exhibits, live animals, and a children’s library.

While in this area, you may wish to visit one of the county’s most memorable landmarks known as Buffy The Cow. Buffy The Cow is a 15-foot tall, 20-foot long fiberglass cow, commemorating the area’s connection with a local butcher. The cow figure makes the perfect photo opportunity and is one of the county’s most memorable landmarks.
