Located in the state of Minnesota, near the city of Minneapolis, Whitewater State Park is a popular destination for those that rent an RV in Winona County. The state park got its name from the rushing Whitewater River that rushed through it, and which also provides much of the recreation in the park. In the south-eastern Buff lands area of the state, the surroundings full of deep valleys and karsts, creating some pretty impressive sights.

Come and see the scenic overlooks, enjoy the excellent fishing, take a day trip to Rochester and take on one of the hikes, it will certainly be a vacation to remember. Whitewater State Park's 1930s facilities are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which is worth seeing in itself.

Getting Outdoors

Hiking is, without a doubt one, of the most popular activities for those that go camping with an RV in Whitewater State Park, and as soon as you see the scenic landscape, you'll see why. The Chimney Rock Trail is one of the most well-trodden in the varied trail system, as it takes visitors up for a lofty view of the Whitewater River. Another good trail is the Meadow Trail, which is much more accessible for hikers with varying abilities, where you'll be surrounded by towering bluffs. Overall there are 10 miles of hiking trails to explore, many of which are accessible for snowshoeing in the winter.

After all that hiking, many people choose to rest and cool down at the beach, coupled with a dip in the cold water. Oxbow beach within the park may be small, but it is the perfect place to relax, with amenities such as a changing room, before heading back to your RV rental.

Both birds and bird watchers make use of this habitat throughout the year, as it provides the diversity that many species of birds need to survive. A huge range calls the park their home, from the wild turkeys that scratch around on the ground to the blue-winged warblers that take to the skies. It is all worth scanning the banks for sandhill cranes. Remember to also pack your fishing pole when RV camping at Whitewater State Park, as the waters here are excellent for trout fishing, with brown, brook, and rainbow trout all available. Fishing is even possible in the winter months, making it a great, year-round activity.

Camping at Whitewater State Park

There are over 100 campsites at the Whitewater State Park RV campgrounds, many of which are located right along the banks of the river. Forty-seven of the sites have electricity hookups, but these are the sites that are located further away from the river. Each site comes with a picnic table, grill, and a fire ring, making outside dining easy, without the need to share facilities with others. Other amenities include flush, and vault toilets and drinking water is also available.

Minnieiskia is the first of the campsites in Whitewater State Park and can be found by the park entrance. There are restrooms, showers, and a dump and recycle station here, plus it has the added benefit of being open to RVs year-round. Cedar Hill Campground is located to the right of the entrance. There are 75 RV sites available here; however, it is closed during the winter months. This campground has a number of amenities, including restrooms, showers, and a dump and recycling station.

Exploring the Area

Camp in an RV near Minnesota and pay a visit to the Minnesota Children's Museum for a day out filled with both fun and learning. Through a range of interactive exhibits, the museum aims to spark children's learning through play, which it achieves very successfully. As well as a range of permanent exhibits, the museum is also host to a range of rotating exhibits meaning no matter how many times you visit, and there will always be something new to see.

Get inspired by some incredible works of art at the Minnesota Marine Art Museliveum. There is something for everyone to enjoy, from Monet to Audubon, and you could spend hours wandering around this impressive gallery, taking in the works from some of the world’s greats. Walk around yourself or take a guided tour led by an expert. The venue also hosts art workshops, live music events, live theater events, and much more. The gallery never fails to impress.

Car fans should pay a visit to the Dahl Auto Museum, which is located in the town of La Crosse, WI. Take a stroll back in time through the historical journey of cars. One of the most interesting exhibits here is the history of the automobile through the eyes of Ford Motor Company, and includes an extensive collection of mascots and beautifully resorted classic motors from the turn of the century all the way to the present day.
