Fort Leonard Wood, nestled into the Missouri Ozarks in the southern region of the state, is a U.S. Army base, one of the largest in the country. For the military, the fort is home to several of the engineering and mechanical schools that help keep the military on the edge of progress. The fort was established just before America joined World War II, and has gone on to absorb the duties of other military bases that have been disbanded and closed in the surrounding region. The closest town to the base is Waynesville, Missouri, just a short drive to the north.
