Let's learn some history. A settler who lived by First Connecticut Lake, Luther Parker, rounded up 300-odd locals and declared themselves independent of the United States in 1832. They called their newfound country the Republic of Indian Stream. This republic, however, was never recognized, and it may have been deliberately ignored in Washington, D.C. After all, these citizens were living in a far-flung part of the country, and it had very little, if any, real impact on the national political stage. The independence died in its infancy when the local sheriff and militia marched onto the republic in 1835 and demanded they allow themselves to be annexed to New Hampshire. A marker at the lake commemorates this interesting time in local history.
