Discover Delhi

Named after the city of Delhi in India, Delhi is a charming town that sprawls along the West Branch of the Delaware River. It was named in honor of its founder, Ebenezer Foote, who was affectionately known as “The Great Mogul” and was famously used as the setting for Jean Craighead George’s 1959 novel My Side of the Mountain.

Delhi’s attractive riverfront setting and proximity to numerous wilderness areas make it an ideal place to rent an RV. It’s a short drive from plenty of family-friendly RV parks and just over 80 miles from bustling Albany.

The Great Outdoors

Book a motorhome rental in Delhi and drive south to the Balsam Lake Mountain Wild Forest, which forms part of the Catskill Park Forest Preserve. It’s a popular trekking destination, with a heritage-listed tower that offers sweeping views across the Catskill Mountains and a rare sphagnum bog that’s been uniquely affected by acid rain. Follow one of the three trails that eventually connect with the 1.6-mile loop route around the summit, which will put you one step closer to reaching the 35 peaks required to join the Catskill Mountain 3500 Club.

Near the Balsam Lake Mountain is the Slide Mountain Wilderness, which encompasses the most extensive tract of old-growth forest in the Catskills. It’s home to 10 of the 35 Catskill High Peaks, making it a popular hiking destination, particularly considering it includes the highest - Slide Mountain (4,180 feet). Keep your eyes peeled for black bears, porcupines, and white-tailed deer while exploring the trails, with around 35 miles of designated hiking routes within the wilderness area.

To the east of Delhi lies the Burnt-Rossman Hills State Forest, a 10,568-acre tract of multi-use land that’s a recreation hub. Around seven miles of the 358-mile Long Path Hiking Trail traverses the Burnt-Rossman Hills State Forest, with primitive camping permitted along the route. If you’re more interested in being on the water, head to the Looking Glass Pond in the north of the state forest where there are fishing piers and a boat dock available.

RV Parks

Pick up your RV rental in Delhi and make the 30-minute drive north to the Susquehanna Trail Campground in Oneonta. It nestles in a picturesque, wooded setting, with an in-ground swimming pool, a children’s playground, and a volleyball court among the facilities available.

Also nearby is the Unadilla / I-88 / Oneonta KOA in Franklin where you’ll find full hookups and a swimming pool. Pets are welcome to stay with you and enjoy a run in the KOA’s private field, with a basketball court and horseshoe pits also available.

Alternatively, you can head east to the Catskill Mountains RV Park in Margaretville, which is situated in the Catskill Forest Preserve. They offer a range of full hookups on the doorstep of fishing, hunting, hiking, and skiing destinations, and Wi-Fi is also available for guests.

You can also make the 30-minute drive into Oneonta where there’s a Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Delhi and head to the Delaware County Historical Association, which details the history and folklife of the region through historic buildings and exhibits. Their 60-acre site includes the 1797 Federal-style Frisbee House where politicians once met to form Delaware County, as well as its original barns and the Frisbee family cemetery. Wander through the 19th-century buildings that have been relocated here from across Delaware County, including a one-room schoolhouse and blacksmith shop, then browse the galleries where cultural exhibits are displayed.

Stroll through the charming town center to admire the Delaware County Courthouse that now functions as the Delhi Village Hall. Pay your respects at the Soldiers Monument that honors the town’s Civil War veterans, then head to the Fitches Covered Bridge that dates to 1870. Also of note is the Sherwood Family Estate, which features numerous buildings dating to the early 19th century and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Delhi makes a good base for exploring the city of Oneonta, which is home to the Yager Museum of Art & Culture. It’s situated on the campus of Hartwick College and features archaeological exhibits dating back to prehistoric times from the Upper Susquehanna area. Browse the Native American baskets, pottery, and clothing on display, together with fine art from Europe and the United States, including photographs and prints by Andy Warhol. If you’re traveling with kids, also make a point of visiting the Science Discovery Center where they can get hands-on with a range of interactive exhibits.

Delhi is home to a small supermarket where you can pick up supplies, as well as a handful of fast food restaurants and eateries for dining out. There are also gas stations if you want to fill up your camper rental in Delhi.

Whether you’re visiting Delaware County for its hiking trails or historic sites, book an RV in Delhi and start planning your next adventure.
