Robert Moses State Park is a stunning stretch of soft white sand beach on Fire Island, just off the southern coast of Long Island and near Babylon. It is easily accessible by taking the Robert Moses Causeway, or a ferry from Bay Shore to Kismet.

Robert Moses State Park was established in 1908 in honor of Robert Moses, who was quickly becoming a urban master planner and pushing New York into the future of transportation. The Robert Moses Causeway was designed in the 50s to make it easier for those living in Brooklyn and Manhattan to enjoy a walk on the rural side. Once it was finished in '64, droves of families were able to spread out across Long Island and Fire Island for holidays and summer fun. Now, it boasts over 3.8 million visitors a year. Enjoy sprawling state park RV camping with miles of natural scenery and wild animals, as well as historical sites.

Getting Outdoors

Robert Moses State Park has a breathtaking stretch of natural flora and fauna that many come to see. Enjoy long walks on the beach, or nature trails supported by boardwalks. The five miles of shoreline is separated into fields, each one offering something a little different. Some allow swimming and offer concessions, while some are perfect for picnicking and have built-in barbecues to cook for yourself. And still, other fields offer surfing and fishing.

Bird watching tours are highly popular, but so are early morning walks to catch glimpses of a fox, rabbits, and more. When you’re not enjoying the land, be sure to enjoy the sea! Shore fishing, boating, canoeing, and watersports are all adored by tourists and locals alike. Kick back like an islander for the day among the sand and surf.

One of the biggest draws is the lovely boardwalk up to the historic black and white banded Fire Island Lighthouse that has welcomed travelers in from across the Atlantic. This stoic structure was built in 1858 and is still a draw for all who visit Fire Island. Climb to the top and pick out boats on the horizon!

Camping at Robert Moses State Park

When you book an RV rental in Suffolk County, it opens the door to an incredible and clean campground and Robert Moses State Park. Playgrounds and picnic areas are perfect for big families, and the park is open year-round. Those picnic areas also have grills set up for groups of any size in Fields 2, 3 and 4. From the uncrowded exploration of the park in the early season to finding camping buddies along the way, Robert Moses offers a wide range of opportunity.

Those who come for the adventure should make way for Field 3 where they can find fishing, biking, hiking, boating, and jetskiing. Host large groups of people in the Field's first-come, first-serve gazebo, or make use of the underpass tunnel that leads to a massive boat basin. Campers are permitted to bring their own boats so long as it has been properly cleaned and drained to ensure the quality and beauty of the beaches and its waters stays as pristine as possible. Crabbing and fishing are popular past times off the pier as long as you have a permit from the Park Office, which is right on the pier, and it is open seven days a week.

For a relaxing day, spread out on Fire Island’s world-renowned soft white sand beaches at the ocean’s edge at Field 5. While all of the fields have stretches of beach, this Field is known for its lovely shoreline. Picking out sweet treats or meals from the concessions bars, or walking along the surf as people enjoy the day is the perfect relaxing activity. Or for some relaxed action, go to Field 2 for a lovely 18-hole Pitch & Putt Golf Course that is open to everyone. State Park RV camping is an experience like no other, especially at Robert Moses!

Exploring the Area

When camping with an RV, your options are limitless. Spending the day in nature and on the shore is incredible, but the best part about Robert Moses State Park is that a short mile away is Kismet, a bustling hamlet filled with things to do, places to visit, and restaurants serving up some of the best seafood specialties. This charming small town is exactly what you would imagine a picturesque fishing town should look like, with laidback locals, and fish markets. Visit without a plan in mind and wander through the charming attractions the town has to offer, enjoying ice cream or lounging on the beach! Book a biking trip through the lovely winery and choose between seeing the farm and winery or the fruit orchards and the winery, or do all three! Learn about the history of Mattituck and sip on some local wine while enjoying the day.

Or get extra adventurous and charter a shark cage diving experience in advance! Ships leaving from the port travel just a half-hour south of Long Island where warm gulf waters bring up mako and blue sharks, along with mahi-mahi, sea turtles, sunfish, and more.

You can also indulge in the local life. Drop-in at The Shack a little further beyond Kismet for a drink, order the Long Island breakfast classic, bacon, egg, and cheese on a roll, and enjoy a day free of worries.
