Mayo Lake lies in the northern region of North Carolina, directly above the cities of Durham, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh. The lake was created with the impoundment of Mayo Creek on the Roanoke River Basin in 1977. Originally Mayo Lake was created to provide cooling water for the local coal plant. Today, surrounded by rolling foothills and farmland, Mayo Lake offers the perfect place to escape to with a rental RV. Drive your RV rental down Highway 501, and you will arrive at the shores of Mayo Lake in no time. The lake is famous for its undisturbed shorelines, perfect habitats for much of North Carolina’s native animals.

Alongside this, fishing and boating are also to be enjoyed on this picturesque water, all the more reason to rent a camper near Mayo Lake. Search for an RV in Person County, and see what a weekend at Mayo Lake can offer you.

Getting Outdoors

Many of Mayo Lake’s visitors come for one thing, its incredible fishing. Set against the backdrop of rolling hills and idyllic farmland, there is no better place to sit and wait for those fish to bite. The lake is home to a range of fish species, most popular and abundant are the bass. Varieties of bass include largemouth bass, black bass, and striped bass. Mayo Lake’s successful fishing has lead to the ‘Mayo Park Bass Classic’ fishing tournament being held here every year. Alongside the bass, there are also high numbers of bluegill, catfish, crappie, pike, and sunfish - plenty of fish to keep Mayo Lake campers occupied.

For those who are not content at fishing or standing idle at the side of the lake, why not take to the lake with a spot of boating. Endless jot can be had from sailing down this picturesque lake, taking in the natural beauty of the untouched shoreline. Regulations don’t allow any permanent docks to be built, but Mayo Lake does have a handful of boat launching sites around the shore - this makes accessing the water a breeze. Those motorhome camping without their own boats can head to Mayo Lake Park on the southern end of the lake. Here, campers can rent a boat for the day, ideal for exploring the lake from a kayak or canoe.

Mayo Lake Park and much of the surrounding area offers campers a fantastic landscape full of hiking and walking trails. During the summer months, the official Mayo Lake Park provides campers with guided tours and nature hikes. These hikes take campers through the park, identifying the different fauna and flora. Hike a little further out of the lakeside parks, and you will arrive on the rolling hills of Person County, although much of the land is farmland, hikers can find many trails that will take them on exciting loops of the surrounding free land.

Exploring the Area

The city of Durham is only a short drive south of Mayo Lake and offers a range of day-tripping opportunities for the whole family. The ‘Museum of Life and Science’ is a must-see when in the city of Durham and offers an educating yet fun-filled day out. The museum boasts a wide range of exhibits showcasing a verity of subjects. These range from scientific exhibits covering maths, weather, sound, heath, and engineering, right through to displays on nature and farmyard animals. This vast museum will keep visitors engaged right through the entire visit, a unique experience for everybody.

The ‘Nasher Museum of Art’ is another museum not to be overlooked when in the city of Durham. This museum houses over thirteen-thousand pieces of individual art, spanning across many eras and genres of art. The museum’s ethos is to champion art from artists that are, in most cases, underrepresented in their field. The museum’s highlight has to be the collection of pre-Columbian art, particularly the Mayan ceramics and Peruvian textiles it houses. This museum is a gem for both art lovers and those new to the world of art.

North Carolina’s capital Raleigh is also short drive south from the shores of Mayo Lake, and it too offers a plethora of sight-seeing spots. The ‘North Carolina Museum of History’ is a must-see for anyone with an interest in history. The museum was born out of one ‘Frederick Augustus Olds,’ who made it his duty to collect a wide range of artifacts from the many counties of North Carolina. Along with the artifacts, he also collected the stories to go with them - an ethos the museum still holds to this day. A few of the must-see pieces are the death mask of Confederate General Robert Hoke and a shoe buckle owned by James Iredell.
