Greenville is a city in Darke County, Ohio, as well as the county seat. It was established in August of 1808 but prior to that, had been known as Fort Green Ville. The fort had been built in 1793 during the Northwest Indian War as a training ground and operational base; at that time, it was the largest wooden fort in North America. A year later, the Legion of the United States and the Kentucky Militia left the fort, heading north to engage in the Battle of Fallen Timbers. In August 1795, the Treaty of Greenville was signed at the fort, ending the Indian Wars. European settlers arrived in 1807, and the city was officially founded in 1808. Today the city is home to various companies, and it is rumored that Old West legend Annie Oakley briefly lived in Greenville.
