An important town of the Shawnee Indians in the early 19th century, Wapakoneta is the seat of Auglaize County in western Ohio an hour's drive from Dayton. The town's name means "white garment," a likely reference to the community's neutral status and a peaceful location after the 1795 Greenville Treaty between the United States and the American Indians of the Northwest Territory.

The French were the earliest European settlers in the county who built a fort in the mid-18th century called Fort Au Glaize. Several decades later, Wapakoneta became a site for a large Quaker mission. Toward the latter part of the 19th century, mastodon bones were dug up in Auglaize County on three separate occasions. Today, Wapakoneta prides itself as the birthplace of Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon. Book an RV in Wapakoneta today and follow in his adventurous footsteps.

Discover Wapakoneta

Dip Into Western Ohio’s Historic Lakes

Drive your motorhome rental from Wapakoneta 30 minutes outside of town for the massive human-made lake of Grand Lake St. Marys State Park. Measuring 13,500 acres, the lake was completed in the early 19th century when the swampy prairie was flooded to act as a reservoir for the Miami and Erie Canal. Swimming, boating, and fishing are popular pursuits in the park. As it’s situated on a major migratory bird route, the park also attracts hordes of waterfowl and wading birds.

Driving your camper rental from Wapakoneta the same distance in the other direction takes you to the 5,800-acre Indian Lake State Park. Functioning the same way as the Grand Lake, Indian Lake formed from various smaller "kettle lakes." Today, the lake is a prime destination for fishing, boating, and skiing. The park is also on a major avian migration route, so Canada geese, grebes, and swans are regularly sighted over the summer.

Hike by the river and through the woods at Sugarcreek Green Outer Loop Trail near Bellbrook. This moderately graded and moderately trafficked loop is suitable for walkers of all fitness levels. Take the horse trail if you are a highly fit walker. Spanning 3.3 miles, the dirt track is well-kept and signposted.

Where to Park Your RV

There are only a couple of campgrounds in Wapakoneta: the Wapakoneta KOA and Glacier Hill Lakes. Both offer full hookup sites, restrooms, and showers. Both also have swimming pools, and Glacier Hill Lakes offers lakeside sites.

Outside of town, your nearest camping options are found in Lima, St. Mary's, and Jackson Center. Farther out, take your RV rental from Wapakoneta to Harrod, Lakeview, and Celina. Several state parks are within a 30-mile radius, including Lake Loramie State Park. Here, there are water and electric sites, restrooms, and showers. A dump station is available on-site while trails and historical attractions (Fort Recovery) are found nearby.

For overnight parking in a pinch, try the local Walmart parking lot on Bellefontaine Street. Ask permission from the store manager, and you may have a place to camp for a night or two.

Set Foot near the Home of the First Man on the Moon

Wapakoneta prides itself as the "home of the first man on the moon," Neil Alden Armstrong. The town's native son and his achievements are honored at the Armstrong Air and Space Museum managed by the Ohio Historical Society. Step inside the museum for a close look at the Gemini 8 spacecraft flown by Armstrong and David Scott, Apollo 11 moon rock, and Armstrong's spacesuits from the Gemini and Apollo missions. Also documented is the Russian side of the space race.

Learn more about Wapakoneta and Auglaize County at the local museum housed in the former First Presbyterian Church. The structure itself, in the Greek Revival style, is architecturally significant as it's the only example of its kind in the eight-county area of west-central Ohio. On display inside are numerous historical items from the city and the county including a storm buggy, an organ, and the orchestra instruments of a local entertainer.

Aside from the museum, a few historical buildings remain in Wapakoneta. One is Gary Log House built in the mid-19th century, an excellent example of a hand-hewn log home of the period. The other is the elegant Auglaize County Courthouse erected in 1894. It's made of local stone and still contains many of its original furnishings.

When you rent a motorhome in Wapakoneta, you’ll find plenty of places to grab fast food, or to sit down for diner or café fare. American comfort food and quick bites, Italian, and Mexican basics are also on the menu. Vegan and vegetarian meals are served in a few locations. When you want to cook your favorite meals, browse the aisles of several grocery and convenience stores found throughout town.

Some of the biggest Midwest cities flank Wapakoneta, so it’s worth considering extending your journey on the road. Stay at one of Wapakoneta’s truck stops while you make your travel plans. Then refuel at one of a handful of gas stations in town before bidding farewell and letting the best RV rental in Wapakoneta take you on a new adventure.
