Covering 1247 acres on the east banks of the Tennessee River lies Mousetail Landing State Park. The uniquely named park is said to have got its name from the Civil War era. One of the nearby factories caught fire, and so many mice escaped, and the area became known as Mousetail Landing.

Mousetail Landing State Park was established in 1986, meaning it is one of the most recent additions to the Tennessee state park system. There are plenty of things for visitors to do, including fishing, hiking, picnicking and swimming, and providing camping facilities. So, what are you waiting for? Search for an RV in Perry County to enjoy all of this and more. While in the area, you could also pay a visit to some nearby towns such as Savannah, Linden, and Hohenwald.

Getting Outdoors

Due to the banks of the river being on Mousetail Landing State Park's doorstep, fishing is a popular activity for those going state park RV camping. You are allowed to fish anywhere along the banks while in the park, making it a good destination to catch a range of species, which includes crappie, stripe, catfish, bream, and bass. Besides fishing from the banks, there is also a boat launch available for visitors to use just half a mile away from the south entrance to the park.

There is a one-day use trail in the park, which covers three miles. This trail is well-trodden, especially as it will give you a chance to explore the area and see the local flora and fauna. There is also an additional eight-mile trail available. However, this is an overnight trail; therefore there are two shelters along the route. For those that want to learn a little more about the area while hiking, a good option is to take one of the nature programs that are offered here, such as the Fall Color Hike or the Wildlife Identification Program.

Although you can take part in lots of action and adventure when motorhome camping in the park, it is also a great place for a little relaxation. There is a great swimming beach on Spring Creek, there are also around 25 picnic areas scattered around the park, 16 of which have grills nearby for a bigger meal. There is a large pavilion with room for around 100 people, great for family reunions and parties.

Camping at Mousetail Landing State Park

Make your stay a relaxing one by camping directly in the state park RV campgrounds. The park offers plenty of amenities for those camping with an RV, including and modern bathhouse and laundromat, plus sites come with electricity and water hook-ups. For those looking for a more primitive camping experience, there are also a few campsites that don't have any hook-ups. Sites also all come equipped with picnic tables and grills, so you can enjoy cooking outside and making the most of nature.

The Paris Landing / Kentucky KOA is located very close to Mousetail Landing State Park and is great for those that would prefer more of a resort-style camping experience in an RV rental as sites here are big rig friendly, with easy in and out access. There is plenty to keep you entertained, such as mini-golf, a heated swimming pool, and disc golf, plus you can even try your hand hunting for treasure in the gem mine.

Exploring the Area

You would never have thought you could see elephants in Tennessee, but in the Elephant Sanctuary, you'll be able to see plenty. The sanctuary provides rest and cares for elephants in need, providing a safe home where they can be looked after with all of their needs met. It is also there to educate the public about the needs of elephants and the crisis they are currently facing in the wild. There are currently 11 elephants in the sanctuary that have been rescued from zoos and circuses.
