When you happen to be camping at Watauga Lake, you might want to take a day off and visit this community. Johnson City has a rich history, and a couple of Civil War battles were fought in the area. Visitors may learn more about it at the Reece Museum. The museum started as a class project by Maxine Mathews, a history professor at East Tennessee State University. The collection of documents and artifacts grew quickly, especially after the locals learned about Mathews’ efforts. Nowadays, the museum has several permanent exhibitions, as well as weekly events and workshops.
