Dilley is a city in Frio County, Texas, south of the county seat in Pearsall. It is a rustic town with lots of green space and open sky. Dilley was originally called Darlington and sometimes called Ford due to the proximity of a Frio River Crossing (Rocky Ford). The settlement was located near the International-Great Northern Railroad, which built its first railroad depot, siding, and stock pen nearby. A post office was set up at Darlington in 1885, followed by a telegraph line in 1890; the town's name was officially changed to Dilley in 1896. By 1965, the town had a health clinic and rest home, a peanut processing plant, and a large watermelon statue (it became one of the largest communities in the county and a shipping hub for watermelon, peanuts, and cattle by 1967).
