Around an hour's drive west of Houston is the charming lakeside community of Eagle Lake, a town with a few thousand residents. Since its inception, Eagle Lake has primarily subsisted as an agricultural community, known mostly for growing rice, grains, and cotton, although as the population grows, the town is beginning to employ a more tourism-based economy.

When you book an RV in Eagle Lake, it will become clear why Eagle Lake is one of Texas’ up and coming vacation destinations. There are fantastic golf courses, accessible airports and highways, and a large lake which shares its name with the town adjacent to it.

This nature lover’s paradise is full of scenic rice fields, lush grasslands full of migratory birds, and a variety of other sounds and sights that will introduce a healthy dose of excitement into your trip. San Antonio, Houston, and Austin are all no more than a few hours’ drive away, so an Eagle Lake RV rental is a fine way to explore large swaths of the Lone Star State.

Discover Eagle Lake

Explore the Outdoors

Eagle Lake has slowly developed a reputation for being a hub for outdoor recreation based on the variety of landscapes and activities found near town. Eagle Lake has often been referred to as the “Goose Hunting Capital of the World,” and is a fantastic location for duck hunting too. It isn’t just a place for hunters to visit, however; Eagle Lake borders a nature preserve called the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge to the north. This federally-protected land was created to protect an assortment of wild animals, particular the Attwater's prairie chicken, an endangered species endemic to the local area. The refuge is a fine place to go birdwatching or photographing animals, and there are several hiking trails and a driving road meandering through the park, making it accessible to all people.

Another place worth visiting when you rent an RV is Brazos Bend State Park, found to the southeast. Brazos Bend State Park also remains a popular spot for birds to stop off during their seasonal treks. Hiking through the park is a pleasure, with tons of masterfully maintained trails weaving through the lush forests. Fishing and swimming in the river are great ways to take a break from the hot Texas sun, and geocaching and orienteering let you test your navigational skills while staying in shape. When you camp out at the park’s campground in your Eagle Lake camper rental, you can even make use of the park’s observatory, a magnificent place to gaze at the solar system and beyond.

If you are longing to bring your Eagle Lake motorhome rental to the scenic Gulf Coast of Texas, Sea Rim State Park is as good a place as any to achieve your dream. The swamps in the inland section of the park contain a large number of alligators, so swimming in these wetlands and bayous is not permitted, but the coastal section of the park is a gorgeous place to read a book, comb the beach for driftwood and seashells, or swim in the refreshing surf of the Gulf of Mexico. There are some parts of the park that are only accessible by boat, but guests may rent a kayak or canoe to explore the vast waterway network found inside.

RV Parks to Visit

You will certainly find some campgrounds and RV parks when you rent an RV in Eagle Lake, though you may need to drive for several minutes to the next town over to find them. Sageville RV Park offers the basics and offers both long-term and short-term stays. There is a laundromat, a water park, and a restaurant across the street in addition to wireless internet and cable television for park guests.

Columbus RV Park and Campground is another place to stay for a night or two, with spacious campsites, laundry facilities, restrooms, internet, and a swimming pool. The park is also available for short-term and long-term stays and offers a military discount for active and retired military members.

Colorado River RV Campground is an upscale resort with a spa, sauna, pool, basketball courts, volleyball, a boat dock on the water, hiking trails, a pet park, mini golf, bike rentals, and a fitness center for all your camping vacation needs.

City Sightseeing

You shouldn’t expect a bustling city when you head off to the splendid town of Eagle Lake, but this charming little community has its fair share of interesting attractions. The Eagle Lake Commercial Historic District is the main focal point of the town, with a number of diners, barbecue joints, and locally owned shops to patronize. The Old City Hall is a stunning Italian Renaissance revival style building with red tile roofs and large arched windows, just one of the town’s many historic buildings.

There are golf courses and lakefront beaches in town, but there is even more fun to be had in other nearby cities like Columbus. The Largest Live Oak in Texas is an often-visited point of interest for both Texans and travelers from far away. You can bask in its majesty while viewing the absurdly large tree, and there is a sign with statistics and facts about it too.

The 1866 Stafford Opera House is a well preserved and stylish building erected back in the 19th century by a wealthy ranching millionaire, R.E. Stafford. It has been renovated and kept true to its original design, and now serves as an event and function hall. There are many other places to see nearby, especially if you drive for an hour in your Eagle Lake camper rental to Houston where there are more sporting events, museums, parks, gardens, and landmarks than you could imagine.
