Let's start with a few questions to narrow down your options.
After the Texas Revolution ended in 1836, the first settlers arrived in the region that would later become the site of Howe. The Jabez brothers were ranchers and entrepreneur. They had heard that when railroads laid down tracks near settlements, these settlements tended to grow rapidly. To entice the Houston and Texas Central Railway to route through Howe, they offered portions of their land to the company. The railroad established a rail switch and a depot on a hilltop, which was nicknamed the Summit because it was the highest point in between the Red River and the Gulf of Mexico. Indeed, once the depot was built, a small settlement sprang up around it, and the Jabez brothers profited from selling plots of land to these new residents. When the post office was established, which often marks the founding date of a town, in 1876, the residents named it “Howe” after a prominent railroad employee.
