The laid-back, mid-sized city of Lufkin is located north of Houston and Beaumont, close to the Louisiana state line. Lufkin has a typical history for the area, as it was founded in 1882 as a railway stop on the way to Houston from Shreveport. Formerly known a Denman Spring, the city was renamed Lufkin after a wealthy cotton merchant who helped in the town's development.

The Great Outdoors

One of the best forests to visit is the Davy Crockett National Forest, named after the pioneer famous for exploring the area.
