Palmetto State Park is a nature preserve resembling the tropics more than typical climate found in the state of Texas. It is home to dwarf palmetto plants (hence the park name) which surround the park's swamp habitat. There are more than 240 bird species and a wide variety of plant life, making the park a birder's paradise. Visitors may also spot raccoons, armadillos, and white-tailed deer on the premises. Guests can swim, canoe, or fish in the San Marcos River or in Oxbow Lake. You can hike or bike the trails, or relax in the picnic pavilion, which has a kitchen with air conditioning.
