Although Haymarket is extremely tiny, the town’s surrounding area has lots to see when you vacation there. Due to its location, the small town and many of its neighbors were caught in the thick of things during both the American Revolutionary War, and the American Civil War. During the Civil War, much of the town was burned to the ground by Union troops, so a lot has been lost. Fortunately, Haymarket still retains some pre-war history to speak of. St Paul’s Church is one of the few buildings that survived the Civil War and is a beautiful reminder of how the area once looked. Locust Bottom, Mt. Atlas, and the Old Town Hall and School are also all on the National Register of Historic Places, and all are worth a visit to admire the architecture.The town of Haymarket has placed a huge emphasis on its own history, as well as the history of the United States, and opted to open the Haymarket Museum in the downtown area (coincidentally housed in the former Town Hall building). Sticking with the historical theme, the town also has a Cold War Museum, which is certainly one of only a few worldwide. The museum was founded by the son of Francis Gary Powers, the famous pilot who was shot down over the USSR during the Cold War. With many exhibits focusing on the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Berlin Wall, this museum is rich with history and consequently happens to be a place to learn a thing or two.Last but not least, Manassas National Battlefield Park is the site of both the first and second battles of Bull Run, famously important and crucial battles that helped turn the tide of the Civil War.
