Discover North Cascades National Park

Getting Outdoors

With its snow-capped mountains and icy rivers and lakes, the North Cascades are sometimes referred to as the American Alps. There’s no shortage of beautiful scenery throughout this enormous park, but to see the best of it, you’ll sometimes need to go off the beaten track.

With this in mind, North Cascades National Park is an excellent destination for hikers. There are around 400 miles of hiking trails that wind their way through and past valleys, forests, glaciers, and lakes, so it’s well worth taking the time to explore on foot. The two-mile River Loop leaves from the North Cascades Visitors’ Center and is a particular favorite, while the short trek to Ladder Creek Falls will have you snapping plenty of photos.

While you’re out hiking, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for a wide range of creatures. Some 200 species of birds and 75 species of mammals live in the park, so you could see everything from gray wolves to spotted owls.

If you feel like taking to the water, you might want to explore Gorge or Diablo Lake by kayak or canoe. Ramps and launches are available for easy access, so you can paddle around and take in the views or maybe wet a line in the hope of catching a rainbow trout. The still waters of these alpine lakes are truly a sight to behold, so you may find that you want to spend as much time as possible on or near the water.
