Cheat Lake is tucked away in West Virginia’s northeastern corner, not far from the borders of Maryland and Pennsylvania. Situated at the intersection of Interstate 68 and Highway 43, Cheat Lake is easily reached from the nearby city of Morgantown, WV, and Washington, PA. Cheat Lake's excellent boating and fishing opportunities, combined with its proximity to these cities, make it a popular destination for motorhome camping.
Cheat Lake itself is a man-made reservoir that forms part of Cheat River, a body of water that played a significant role in the growth of the region. During the early 19th century, iron was the main industry here, and the Cheat River aided this greatly by providing a convenient method of transport to ferry the iron down to cities as far as New Orleans, LA. Although this industry no longer operates here, Cheat River and Cheat Lake, in particular, remain popular thanks to the abundance of recreational opportunities they offer. Search for an RV in Monongalia County for your next getaway, and see what all of the hype is about.
Although some of Cheat Lake’s 13-mile shoreline is occupied by residential housing, the majority has been left untouched and present plenty of chances to get out and about in the great outdoors.
Boating of every kind is undoubtedly the most popular way to spend time on Cheat Lake. Three marinas sit along the southern banks of the lake and are home to several boat launch ramps, boat storage facilities, and rental outlets. Sunset Beach is the only marina to provide a public launch ramp and is ideal for those camping at Cheat Lake with their own boat. Kayak and canoe rentals are also available here for those who are hoping to embark on an adventure down Cheat Lake’s secluded inlets that are home to a variety of fascinating birdlife.
RV camping at Cheat Lake is also common among fishing enthusiasts. Thanks to the council’s continued monitoring efforts, Cheat Lake continues to be one of the cleanest lakes in West Virginia, boasting some of the best bass fishing in the state. It has become famous for its excellent largemouth bass fishing, but channel catfish, sunfish, and walleye are also up for grabs here. Where you set up a base for the day depends on personal preference and ability levels. The deepest waters can be found closest to the dam and are home to trophy-sized largemouth bass, while old Christmas trees have been submerged near public fishing piers to provide a handy fishing spot for beginners.
There are plenty of off-water activities to keep you busy during your Cheat Lake camping trip. Along with a public beach, swimming area, playground, and an abundance of day-use facilities, Cheat Lake Park is the starting point for the popular Cheat Lake Trail. Spanning across 4.5 miles, this ADA-accessible trail takes explorers on a scenic trail along the lake’s shoreline and provides a great introduction to local flora and fauna in the area.
Some of the closest campgrounds can be found just east of Cheat Lake, and not far from Coopers Rock State Forest in Maryland. Sand Springs Campground is one of the area’s most popular campgrounds, and for a good reason; its facilities are top-class. Campers here will enjoy full hookup facilities for their RV rental, an onsite swimming pool, modern washroom facilities, and even free, site-wide WiFi. This site is big rig friendly; however, make sure to call ahead of your visit as large sites are limited.
Chestnut Ridge Regional Park Campground is just down the road and provides similar amenities. All of the 70 campsites are equipped with partial hookups and have easy access to the onsite dump station. Campers without a self-contained rental RV can also make use of the well-maintained washrooms here, complete with hot showers and flushing toilets.
When you haven’t had your fill of the great outdoors and need more, consider taking your Morgantown camper rental to the West Virginia Botanic Gardens, which sits just ten minutes south of Cheat Lake. Encompassing 85-acres, this is one of the state’s largest public gardens and is impeccably maintained. The gardens have been carefully designed so that there is something to see no matter what time of the year you visit. Four miles of ADA-accessible boardwalks traverse the forests, formal gardens, water features, and wetlands, and make for an afternoon well spent.
There is also plenty to see in the city of Morgantown itself. Those camping with an RV nearby, with a keen interest in history, should not miss the chance to visit the Morgantown History Museum. This fascinating establishment preserves and celebrates the pioneer history of the region, as well as the many industries that it has supported. From the role it played in the ironworks industry to its significance as a producer of glass, visitors can learn about it here.
Campers with a more creative eye can visit the city’s Art Museum, which also happens to be owned and run by West Virginia University. Free to enter, a visit here only requires an hour or so of your time but is bound to inspire creativity in every visitor. Each of the carefully curated exhibitions features work by a local or regional artist as well as more internationally renowned painters.
