Chief Logan State Park is a park located just outside of Logan, West Virginia. The park, Logan County, and the town were all named for Chief Logan. He was a Mingo or Iroquois Native American chief who lived in the area prior to the Revolutionary War. Chief Logan fought against Virginian colonists in the early 1770s. He became famous throughout the early United States for a speech he delivered about the horrors of war. An oak tree where he is said to have delivered the speech survived until 1964.

The campsites are only open from the spring to the summer, and they may be closed due to the weather. The park has a maximum stay of 14 nights and also has a few restrictions on how many weekend nights one can reserve.

Exploring the Area

West Virginia Mine Wars Museum in Matewan, WV chronicles the history of the mine wars. The mine wars occurred around 1921. Over 10,000 coal miners of many different ethnicity groups united to demand better working conditions. The strike and the subsequent skirmishes were some of the most seminal moments in the history of workers’ rights in West Virginia. The museum details that history and includes artifacts from the time.

Coal House in Williamson is a unique piece of architecture. The house was built in 1933 from 65 tons of bituminous coal from a nearby seam. History enthusiasts who rent an RV in West Virginia might find this place interesting.

Soldiers of the Coalfields in Kimball is a notable exhibit at the Kimball War Memorial. The exhibit honors the memory of several African-American WWI veterans from West Virginia.
