Discover Butternut Lake RV rentals for memorable road trips

Formed by a glacier as it gouged its way north on its retreat, Butternut Lake is a popular local Wisconsin fishing hole. It gets its name from butternut trees, which once were abundant in the area. Though they’re no longer common in the area, nearly dying out due to a contagious fungal canker disease, a few groves still remain. Butternuts are distantly related to walnuts and produce an oval-shaped nut that can be used to make bread. Where butternut trees once ran rampant, tall oaks, maples, and firs have taken over the low hills, hiding all signs of civilization and furthering the illusion of isolation and remoteness.

Getting Outdoors

Resembling an oddly-shaped inkblot smear, Butternut Lake encompasses around 1,200 acres. Its many bays and inlets are shaded by tall hardwoods, providing cover to the aquatic plant life and various species of fish. Though the water is dark, almost inky black, it is surprisingly clear and clean. Considered one of the top fishing spots by the locals, anglers can expect to catch muskie, walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike, perch, and crappie. The locals maintain an unofficial “catch-and-release” policy because the state does not replenish the fishery, as it does for many other lakes. This unwritten policy is followed in order to bolster the population with large, healthy fish. Though visitors can keep the fish if they intend to consume it over a campfire immediately, they are strongly encouraged to release it, too, if they are fishing for sport.

Camping at Butternut Lake

Though the region surrounding Butternut Lake is a mix of public and private lands, the public portions are largely protected by the state, to prove the natural area. As a result, RV camping near Butternut Lake is limited. One of the closest options, Smith Lake County Park is just outside Park Falls. The RV campground at Smith Lake has 30 sites with electric hookups. It’s very close to several ATV trails, which may be a plus for some. The roads to the campground are not plowed in winter, though the facility is open for use.

Exploring the Area

Socializing is almost as equally important as getting in touch with one’s inner wild side. It’s sometimes necessary to return to civilization. A rental motorhome makes it easy to explore the charming small towns scattered across northern Wisconsin. Search for quaint bistros, boutique shops, and souvenir gift stores for an item to commemorate your vacation. The town of Butternut, WI, though small, has a few cute little shops, including an art gallery that features local artists. The town’s ice cream shop, one of the few in this area, boasts Wisconsin-made ice cream. Pull up in an RV rental and kick up your heels on their front porch as you enjoy almost-homemade ice cream. Step into the past at the Greenwood School in Fifield, WI. The historic school-turned-museum also once functioned as a church, town hall, and community center. Several artifacts, tools, and school-related items from the late 19th century are on display.
