Prior to 1906, the coastal city of El Cerrito went by the name of Rust, after a German blacksmith who moved to the area in 1883 and built his businessman there. In those days, El Cerrito was little more than a bare landscape punctuated by herds of cattle and chicken farms. Following a critical earthquake in San Francisco the population of the town rapidly expanded as refugees sought greener pastures and in 1917, El Cerrito was incorporated into a city. Since then El Cerrito has continued to grow and nowadays is filled with pleasant gardens and modern amenities.
