Sutter is a census-designated city in Sutter County, California; it was first established sometime prior to 1871 when it was known as South Butte. In 1888, the city was moved to the area around the New Sutter Post Office and subsequently took on the post office's name. The city's name was later reduced to just Sutter. The city was part of a plan to construct a railroad that would pass through Sutter, and to become the county seat, but neither the railroad nor the county seat status materialized.

Book an RV in Sutter County and you are ready for a vacation both scenic and relaxing. There are other towns that may also be worth visiting. Gridley, in 1896, had one of the largest canned peach industries in the world. Yuba City is home to a number of professional artists, actors and singers, and some professional athletes. Grass Valley was originally named Boston Ravine, then Centerville; a post office opened here in 1851 and the city was renamed for the last time in 1852, for unknown reasons. Rio Oso, despite its inland location, has an elevation of 52 feet above sea level; the name means “Bear River” in Spanish. Your Sutter travel trailer rental is your ticket to a vacation that non-RVers can only dream about.

The Great Outdoors

Colusa National Wildlife Refuge is within the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex. Most of the area is a wetland, with some grassland and riparian habitats. It is a migratory bird breeding ground established in 1945. It is open from dawn to dusk all year round; visitors can drive along a graveled road through the wetland or hike a trail following a riparian slough. However, visitors are asked to stay on the trail or inside their vehicles to protect the ecosystems. Cruise the refuge in your Sutter motorhome rental and combine outdoor adventure with the comfort of home.

Delevan National Wildlife Refuge is another reserve within the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex. It was created in 1962 and financed by the Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp Act (or Federal Duck Stamp, as it is known today). In addition to providing feeding and nesting grounds for migratory birds, it is a habitat for endangered species, diverse flora and fauna, and provides hunting and wildlife observation opportunities to the general public. Hunting is seasonal and photographers can use a photography blind from late fall to early spring (it must be reserved in advance). Otherwise, wildlife viewing and photography is restricted to the roads on the area's perimeter.

Gray Lodge Wildlife Area is a multi-use wildlife preservation area that accommodates both resident and migrant bird and mammal species. It is comprised of riparian areas, grassy fields, and ponds; visitors can view the more than 300 species (of birds and mammals) all year. Fishing is allowed in the spring and summer, hunting in regulated seasons. Educational programs and guided tours are provided by staff and volunteers; there are a self-guided nature trail and informative exhibits that provide context to the spectacular scenery.

RV Parks

There are numerous RV parks and campgrounds in the surrounding area. Some may have tent camping, long-term RV rentals, cabins, and possibly mobile homes. Your Sutter camper rental is the answer to making yourself at home at any of them.

The Parkway RV Resort & Campground is a shaded tranquil campground that was developed in 2004. It has restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, and Wi-Fi access. There is a swimming pool and also a gift/convenience store, and firewood can be purchased. The park has large grassy areas and some sites have paved pads, fire rings, and picnic tables.

River Reflections RV Resort & Campground is located along the Feather River near Oroville, next to a nature preserve. It is a year-round RV park with full hookups and easy access to nature activities and nearby resources. Some sites have paved pads.

Exploring The City

There are many interesting things to see and do in Sutter and the surrounding area. There are a few covered bridges but sadly one was destroyed in a fire during the winter of 2018. Another one is closed but can be viewed from a distance; it has a visitors center where you can ask questions and purchase gifts. The bridges are single span, arch supported bridges built in the 1850s. A nearby Chinese temple offers a glimpse of history and is staffed by a knowledgeable proprietor who can provide you with statistical facts and personal stories. The atmosphere is tranquil and relaxing. There are a number of parks and outdoor urban recreational areas; one of the local farms specializes in pumpkins and offers its guests hay rides, train rides, and a corn maze. It's can be an especially interesting and fun place for younger children. Remember that it is a tradition (well, at least it should be) to take your Sutter RV rental for a spin on the highways while you have a chance.

Sutter is equally promising when it comes to places to dine; there are a few commercial chain restaurants on hand which will make kids happy, but most of the restaurants are locally owned and operated. Some have very interesting and non-commercial names as a result. One of the Italian establishments is open for breakfast (something you don't see very often). Diners checking this place out should ask for the Godfather pizza, which allows you to choose your own toppings. Portions are large, so plan on taking some of your dinner home to your Sutter luxury RV rental for a late night snack. Nothing says “vacation” quite so much as blowing off your diet, so enjoy.
