Raymer is a statutory town in Weld County, Colorado, but is legally known by two names: Raymer (by the state of Colorado) and New Raymer (by the U.S. Postal Service). The original Raymer townsite was platted in 1888, shortly before the opening of the Raymer post office in June of the same year. Unfortunately, the town did not succeed and families began to move away until the post office was closed in 1895. The township was replatted in 1909, followed by the opening of a new post office in November of that year; however, in 1919 the town was incorporated as the Town of Raymer while the postal service continued to insist that the post office be named New Raymer (so it wouldn't be confused with the first, now defunct, post office) and refused to deliver mail to any address titled “Raymer”. To date, the postal service still continues its argument, as does the state.
