St. Paul's Church National Historic Site

attraction Mount Vernon, NY
Are you interested in the Civil War? If so, head over to St. Paul's National Historic Site. The church was built in the early 18th century, and is one of New York's oldest parishes. After the Battle of Pell's Point in 1776, the church was used as a hospital, and then for six years, as a center for military development. In the early 20th century, industrialisation saw a decline in the upkeep of the church, but in 1942, the interior of the church was restored and now looks as it did in the 18th century. The church has a very old organ and free concerts are often held. Be sure to visit the cemetery next to the church. There are graves here dating as far back as 1704. There is a traditional museum on site, where you can watch a video about the church. There are also displays of battle scenes, and other artifacts relating to the Civil War. If you have kids with you, they will love the history scavenger hunt. Guided tours are also on offer. This church is well worth a visit.
