In the Upper Peninsula portion of Michigan, just below the Canadian border on the coast of Green Bay rests J.W. Wells State Park, better known as Wells State Park. Not to be confused with Wells State Park in Massachusetts, this 678-acre park is located just 30 minutes from the city of Green Bay, 30 minutes south of Escanaba, and an hour east of Iron Mountain.

J.W. Wells State Park was opened to the public in 1925 when the children of lumber worker and three-time mayor of Menominee, John Walter Wells, donated the land to the state of Michigan. Ten years later, the CCC built amenities throughout the park, including water and sewage facilities. To this day, thousands of outdoor adventurers go camping at Wells State Park in Michigan every year with their families.

If you find yourself in the Great Lakes Region of the United States for your motorhome camping trip, make sure to stop by Wells State Park. In the summer, it’s great for swimming and wildlife viewing, and doubles in winter as a great place for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Rent an RV in Menominee County and see what the Great Lakes has in store for you.

Getting Outdoors

Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the seven-mile hiking trail available at Wells State Park. Traverse through the natural woodlands of the Upper Peninsula through pine trees and cedar, then marvel as the trail opens up to the astonishing shores of Green Bay. In the wintertime, make sure to bring your cross-country skis or snowshoes. The Wells-Cedar River Trail is open year-round for both winter and summer hiking activities.

Green Bay is considered to have some of the best brown trout fishing in Michigan. If angling is your passion, cast a line out into the bay and see what you can catch. Anyone over the age of 17 must have a valid fishing license. Under-17s don't need one, but, like licensed anglers, they must know the most current fishing regulations and follow them.

If you plan to do some hunting this year, head over to the northern portion of the park to Escanaba where the deer hunting is sublime. While not technically a part of Wells State Park, it's a safe distance from the park’s residents but not too far of a commute. The scenery is superb and the forest is buzzing with game. See if you can snag a snowshoe hare or a mallard while you’re out.

Camping at Wells State Park

Guests planning to camp at Wells State Park have around 150 campsites to choose from when booking their stay. All sites are back-in. Sewer hookups aren't available in the park; however, every site has access to water hookups and 30 or 50-amp electrical hookups. Pets are allowed on-site as long as they are domesticated and under control. Each campsite has a fire ring, and firewood is available for purchase at the park.

If you're worried about staying connected out in the wilderness, don’t fret! Most major cell phone providers get service in the area. There are also hot showers and public restrooms available for Wells State Park campers. Other amenities include a dump station, water spigot, and picnic shelter. Certain sites and some of the trails are ADA accessible; contact the rangers or help desk ahead of time to make sure your needs are met.

Exploring the Area

Are you a history buff as well as an angler? Just a stone’s throw from the park is the West Shore Fishing Museum off M-35. What was once the Charles L. Bailey Commercial Fishery was abandoned and fell into disrepair. In 1997, it was restored and converted into a fishing museum for visitors to explore and see this preserved plot of history. Check out the exhibits and artifacts from the original fishery.

Do you spend Sundays on the couch with friends and nachos, screaming for your favorite NFL team on the television? Well, instead of watching it on your phone in your RV rental, why not venture to the historic Lambeau Field? Located an hour and a half from the park, this famous stadium hosts the legendary Green Bay Packers every season. The iconic green and yellow national football team has occupied Lambeau Field in Green Bay since 1957. Major NFL history moments have been made in this stadium, including the 1967 Ice Bowl for the NFC championship. Take a tour of the facility, have dinner in the restaurant, or buy some memorabilia from your favorite Packers player in the gift shop. And if it’s the right time of year, make sure to catch a home game.

Art enthusiasts might enjoy taking a short drive north to Escanaba to the Bonifas Arts Center. Artists of all types are represented at BAC. There's a theater where you can watch a play, concert, or even a musical. There are also many exhibits happening every week. This organization also specializes in art education for the public and fostering community and artistic expression. Expand your horizons at Bonifas Arts Center in Escanaba.

You can grab a bite to eat at any of the local mom-and-pop restaurants in the area before you get back on the road. There are also many gas stations nearby to help you get to your next destination. Fill up on food, gas, and supplies, because the rest of your RV camping journey awaits you.
