The small port city of Escanaba, Michigan can be found on the Upper Peninsula, which connects with the Lower Peninsula by way of the Mackinac Bridge. Escanaba is about as far as you could possibly get from Detroit despite being in the same state, so it has a very different feel than the rest of Michigan. The city's name comes from the name of a smaller native village inhabited by the Ojibwa tribe in the same area, thought to mean “land of the red buck” by language experts.
