Located in Buena Vista County, Iowa, Storm Lake is near to the city of Sioux City to its west and Des Moines to the southeast. According to legend, Storm Lake gained its name after a trapper was caught in a severe storm here. Since the early settler days, the large town of Storm Lake has developed on the north coast of the lake, but the southern coast remains largely undeveloped. To the north, you can find Spirit Lake, a small town and recreation area on the Iowa-Minnesota border.

Getting Outdoors

Boating is popular on Storm Lake, and there is a marina at the west end with boat ramps, boat rental, and slips, plus the Lakeside Marina at the east end of the lake that also has a campground. A tackle shop is available at the marina, along with a boat supplies store that can provide equipment for water skiing and other water sports. Jet skiing is also popular, and there is a gas station available.

Camping at Storm Lake

There are two campgrounds on Storm Lake, almost next to each other at the east end of the lake. Lakeside Marina and Campground offers spacious campsites, with full hook-ups, with up to 50-amp electric, water, and sewage connections. Lakeside campsites are available, and every site has a picnic table and fire ring for outdoor cooking and eating. There is a swimming beach at the marina, just a short walk from the campground and plenty of opportunities to get out on the water. A great location for camping at Storm Lake.

The city of Storm Lake is located along the north shore of the lake and offers every convenience you need while camping with an RV. Along with many gas stations, the usual fast-food restaurants and plenty of other food choices, there is also lots of shopping opportunities.
