Fort Meade, Maryland is a town in Maryland situated near the state’s capital of Annapolis. Fort Meade is typical of many parts of Maryland and the Upper South in terms of climate. The summers are considered hot and humid; the winters are considered fairly mild. Snow is common during the winter, but it doesn’t tend to pile up for weeks on end the way it does farther north. During the summer, the days are long and hot but most of the year is a pleasant.

Fort Meade is named for U.S. Army Fort George G. Meade. General Meade was a United States Army general who commanded the Army of the Potomac during the US Civil War. He is best known for defeating Confederate General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Gettysburg. The town built around the base is similar, in many ways, to company towns. Company towns are small towns built around a single company or industry. Fort Meade, MD is built around the base. Since the base houses so many different departments of the US Defense complex, there is a great amount of recreation offered.

Those that choose to vacation here will also drive the twenty minutes to Annapolis to visit the state’s capital. The town is about thirty minutes away from Baltimore and a little over an hour from Washington DC.
